A field full of horses

말에 관심이 있다면 한번쁨 읽어볼 만하다. 그러나 조금 이해하기 어려운 문장들이 있었다. 내 실력이 부족한 것일지도 모르고, 아니면 1993년에 쓰여진 책이여서 낯선 것일지도 모르겠다. 약간의 배경지식이 있는 (영어를 모국어로 사용하는) 5-8세용 책인것 같다.  

 

I walk along the winding lane, = a narrow road in the countryside or in a town

Past the tangled willows. 뒤얽힌 버드나무들(willow trees)

I climb up on the five-barred gate and…

 

There they are.

There’s nothing I’d like to do than just sit and look at horses.

 

One stands and stamps in a timothy patch.

 

One crops the grass with a champing sound.

*champ = chomp: 시끄럽게 음식을 씹다. Chew food noisily

 

One rolls on her back in a dusty wallow.

*wallow: 동물이나 어린아이가 진흙 속에서 뒹굴다. 뒹굴기

 

One dreams in the shade of a big copper beech with eyes half shut and tail slowly swishing.

*a copper beech: 불그스름한 갈색 잎을 가진 나무. 크다.

 

One trots up to see if I have apples in my pockets.

She’s my favorite and I wish that she were mine.

 

Her eyes are big and soft, her nostrils flared and sniffing, and every now and then she gives a sudden shiver to keep the flies away.

  • nostrils: 콧구멍

  • flare: 확 타오르다 / 병 따위가 심해지다. Get worse / 더 넓어지다. Make wider

  • sniff: 코를 킁킁거리다.

  • every now and then: 가끔, 종종

 

Watch her toss her mane and arch her neck and flick her ears and blow down gently through her nose.

*flick 휙 휘두르다. 휙 넘기다. 짧고 재빠른 움직임을 가지고 어떤 것을 치거나 움직이다.

 

Would you like to touch her twitching nose?

It’s silky soft, but bristly too.

  • twitching: 씰룩거리는

  • bristle: 다수의 짧고 뻣뻣한 털. – bristly

 

Would you like to make the sounds she makes?

Horses whinny, horses snuffle, horses nicker, snort, and neigh.

  • Whinny: 조용히 히힝 울다.

  • Snuffle: 코를 킁킁거리다.

  • Nicker: 울부짖다.

  • Snort: (약간 불만, 화 따위가 있음) 콧바람을 불다.

  • Neigh: /네이/ 겁먹거나 기쁠 때 말이 내는 길고 크고 높은 울음소리.

 

I love to smell her horsey smell.

It makes me think of muck and straw, of earth and leaves and grass.

  • Muck: 거름

  • Straw 지푸라기

 

I love to watch her walk and trot and canter and gallop.

  • canter: 느린 구보

  • gallop: 치솟다. 전속력으로 달리다. 빨리 나아가다. 말의 4개의 발이 동시에 지면에서 떨어지는 발놀림

 

I love to watch her buck and rear.

  • buck: 말이 등에 탄 사람을 떨어뜨리려고 등을 굽히고 머리를 낮춰서 뒷발로 뛰어오르다. 강력히 저항하다.

  • rear: 뒤의, 뒷발로 서다. 우뚝 솟다.

 

I even love to watch her standing still.

 

I love to watch her with her foal. 한 살 미만인 말의 새끼.

His head is small, his body’s short, his legs are very long.

He jumps and kicks and starts to run.

And stops.

And dashes in a circle.

 

If you could choose any horse,

Which color would it be?

 

The skewbald or the golden palomino?

  • skewbald 갈색과 흰색으로 얼룩진 말.

  • palomino: /펠레미:노/ a horse that is gold in color with a white mane and tail.

The black, brown, dun, or bay? 회갈색 / 불그스름한 갈색, 밤색 /

The chestnut, piebald, roan, or gray? 밤색 /

  • piebald: 검은색과 흰색이 얼룩덜룩하게 섞인 말

  • roan: 붉은 색, 검정, 갈색이 약간의 흰색과 섞인 말.

 

I have my favorite, but I love them all.

There’s nothing I’d rather do than just sit and be with horses.
