The magic school bus and the climate challenge
지구 온난화에 대해 재미있게 풀어쓴 책이다. 지구 온난화가 무엇이고, 왜 지구 온난화가 발생하며, 그에 따른 변화는 무엇인지를 알려준다. 또한 지구 온난화를 조금이라도 늦추기 위해서 우리가 할 수 있는 일에 대한 현실적인 조언도 해준다. 딱딱하고 어려울까봐 조금 걱정하였는데, 우려와 달리 재미있게 읽을 수있었다. 무엇보다 2010년에 출판된 책이라 오래된 표현이 거의 없는것 같아서 좋았다.

What is global warming? Global warming is a rise in the average temperature of the land and water on Earth.
Melting causes more melting: Ice I white. White reflects most of the sunlight that hits it. So the sun can’t heat up the ice. However, water is not white. It absorbs most of the sunlight that hits it. So the water gets warmer.
Changes: 1) Global warming is melting permafrost soil that is usually frozen. 2) It makes some places too dry. 3) It raises the sea level. 4) It changes the ocean chemistry and harms coral reefs and other sea life 5) Warming causes stronger hurricanes and tornadoes… and more forest fires… and bigger blizzards (Global warming puts more water in the air in some places. That means more rain, and when it gets cold, more snow). Etc.
* permafrost: 표면 아래까지 항상 얼어있는 지역
* blizzard:눈보라, 폭설
Most of the atmosphere is made up of these two gases: Oxygen & Nitrogen
Major heat trappers: water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane
“Most of today’s warming is caused by the increasing level of heat-trapping gases in the atmosphere,” said the Friz. “Heat-trapping gases are also called greenhouse gases.”
What is the “Greenhouse effect”?
A greenhouse uses glass to trap heat to keep the plants warm. The greenhouse effect is when heat-trapping gases act like the glass in a green house and make the earth warmer.
Is the greenhouse effect bad?
The greenhouse effect isn’t all bad. If there weren’t any heat-trapping gases the earth would freeze up. The natural greenhouse effect keeps the earth at the right temperature for us. But when there are too many greenhouse gases, the earth heats up too much. This causes trouble!
“A lot of extra CO2 is made when people burn fossil fuels,” said the Friz.
“Most of that CO2 is being made by things people do!”
“And the CO2 is making the earth warmer and warmer!”
Why do people burn fossil fuels? To make energy
“How can we stop global warming?” we wailed.
“One way is to use less energy,” the Friz said. “Another way is to use alternative energy! That’s energy made with less-or no-fossil fuels.”
