Chapter1. A very unusual shell

 

Rachel and Kirsty had come to Rainspell Inland for their holidays.

The girls jogged over to the pool and crouched down to see.

* jog 천천히 일정한 속도로 달리다. 특히 운동의 형태로

* crouch: 무릎을 굽혀 쪼그려 앉다

 

A little brown crab scuttled sideways across the sandy bottom and vanished under a rock.

Thanks to Jack Frost’s wicked spell, the fairies were lost on Rainspell Island. And until they were all found there would be no color in Fairyland.

She was shading her eyes with her hand and looking further along the beach.

 

Then Rachel could see it too – something winking and sparkling in the sunshine.

* wink: 반짝거리다.

 

…. Until they got goose-bumps.

A sudden gust of wind whipped her hair across her face.

*whip: 어떤 것을 재빨리 가져오다.

The wind tugged at her T-shirt and made goose-bumps stand out on her arms.

They looked back and saw little swirls of sand being blown in the wind where they’d just been.

 

A large scallop shell appeared.

 

It was pearly white with soft orange streaks, and it was tightly closed.

Quickly the girls knelt down on the sand, spilling the little shells out of their hands.

 

Inside the shell, a tiny, silvery voice hummed softly.

Chapter2. The magic feather

 두 소녀는 Amber을 구하기 위해 힘으로 조개를 열어보려고 한다. 그러나 소용이 없자 나뭇가지나 돌을 사용하려는 생각을 한다. 그러나 주변에 ‘driftwood’가 없었고, 돌을 사용하면 Amber가 다칠지도 모른다고 생각한다. 그래서 그들은 ‘the magic bags the Fairy Queen have them’을 사용하여 그곳에서 ‘shimmering golden feather’를 발견한다. 그리고 Amber의 조언을 받아 그 깃털로 조개를 간질인다. 그리고 안전하게 Amber를 구출한다.

 

You tickle the shell.

 두 소녀는 Amber에게 자신들이 그녀의 자매인 Ruby를 찾았으며, Ruby를 통해 나머지 여섯 명이 위험에 처했다는 사실을 알았다고 이야기해준다. 그리고 Fairyland는 색을 잃어 슬프게 느껴진다는 말도 한다. 이 말을 들은 Amber는 Ruby가 보고 싶다고 이야기한다. 그래서 그 세 명은 Ruby를 발견했던 장소로 가지만 pot에는 Ruby대신 한 마리의 개구리가 있었다.

 

She shot out of the shell and up into the air, her wings fluttering in a rainbow-colored blur

*blur 흐릿한 것.

Amber spun through the sky, turning cartwheels one after the other.

* one after the other: 잇따라,

 

Her flame-colored hair was held in a high ponytail, tied with a band of peach blossoms.

In her hand was an orange wand tipped with gold.

Kirsty and Rachel couldn’t get a word in. 대회에 끼어들 수가 없었다.

Amber did a joyful backflip. 뒤로 공중제비

She and Kirsty had flown with Ruby to Fairyland. Ruby had shrunk them to fairy size and given them fairy wings.

It’s really comfy. = comfortable

Chapter4. Home sweet home

Pot 옆에 있는 개구리(Bertram)는 King Oberon의 부하였다. 그리고 Bertram은 pot안에 있는 Ruby를 안전하게 지키고 있었다. Ruby는 여러 나뭇가지, 잎, 열매로 pot내부를 아름답게 꾸미고 있었는데, 이를 Amber, Rachel, Kirsty에게 보여준다. 그리고 Ruby는 Fairyland를 그리워하는 Amber를 위해 pond에 마법의 가루를 뿌려 Fairyland의 형상을 보여준다. 그러나 모두가 그 형상을 보고 있는 사이에 차가운 바람이 물의 표면에 잔물결을 일으키기 시작한다. 그리고 pond 위에는 Fairyland 대신에 사악한 Jack Frost의 형상이 나타난다. Bertram은 이는 Jack Frost의 goblins가 가까이에 있다는 의미라고 말한다.

 

* plump: 통통한(polite word for fat)

Bertram bowed his head. 머리를 숙였다.

 

He suddenly looked very stern.

*stern: severe, or showing disapproval

 

The air around them fizzed with tiny red flowers and orange bubbles.

* fizz: produce gas

Rachel and Kirsty fluttered through the air, dodging a butterfly that was as big as they were.

* flutter = move        

* dodge = avoid being hit by something by moving quickly to one side

 

“I’ am getting better at flying!’

There were little chairs made from twigs tied with blades of grass. 풀의 납작한 부분

 

Bertram helped them to heave it into the pot.

* heave: 무거운 것을 많은 힘을 사용해서 들어올리다. = move

Ruby lined it with sweet-smelling rose petals.

* line 일직선이 되게 하다. 한 줄로 세우다.

 

*… were all drab and grey. 칙칙한 초록 똥 색

Another picture was taking shape.

두 명의 Goblins 가 요정 들 주위에 등장했다. 다행히 두 소녀와 요정들과 개구리는 안전한 곳에 숨어 있다가, 그들이 가고 난 뒤에야 pot으로 돌아왔다. 그러나 그들이 pot으로 다가가자 pot의 일부가 얼어있어서 더 이상 요정들이 들어갈 수 없었다.

 

 The two girls crouched down behind the bush next to Bertram.

Rachel and Kirsty couldn’t stop their teeth chattering.

*hooked noses

 Rachel saw a hook-nosed shadow flit across the clearing towards them.

*a gruff voice

Keep your feet to yourself!

It sounded as if the goblins were pushing and shoving each other.

Get out of my way!

Rachel and Kirsty looked at each other in alarm.

 

Chapter6. Bertram to the rescue

Rachel과 Kirsty는 나무 막대기를 이용해서 얼음을 깨보려고 하였다. 그러나 개구리가 점프의 힘을 이용해서 두 번 만에 얼음을 깨뜨릴 수 있었다. 요정들은 무사히 pot으로 들어갔고, 두 소녀는 무사히 부모님의 곁으로 돌아온다. 그러나 부모님과 아이들은 섬이 무언가 다르다는 기운을 느낀다. 더 이상 따뜻하기보다는 찬 기운이 느껴졌기 때문이다.

 

They drummed on the ice with their tiny fists.

 

Rachel and Kirsty rushed over to fish out these bits before they melted.

 

I’m glad Ruby isn’t on her own any more.

 

Kirsty said with a shudder.

 

They made their way back to the beach.

 

The trees swayed in the wind, and the leaves rustled as if they were whispering to each other.
