거의 일주일 만에 책 한권을 끝낸것 같다. 느리지만 앞만 보고 계속 가야겠다. Level 6은 쉽게 나에게 올 것 같지는 않다. 하지만 그렇다고 포기할 수도 없는 노릇이다. 그렇기에 아무런 티가 나지 않더라고 꾸준히 쌓아 올릴 것이다. 나 스스로가 나의 발전을 믿지 않는다면 누가 믿겠는가?

Chapter1.

Why didn’t you tell us we’d be walking through pricker bushes?

* pricker 찌르는 사람, 찌르는 것.

 

I’m not going any farther until you spill the beans.

* spill the beans: tell ppl secret information 비밀을 불다

 

He plopped down next to Ruth Rose.

그는 털썩 주저앉았다.

 

Out with it! 다 말해라!

What’s with the binoculars? 웬 망원경이야?

 

Between the branches, Dink could see glimpses of the Indian River.

The kids picked their way through the undergrowth. 덤불

The birch tree was perfect for climbing. The smooth limbs made a natural ladder.

From his perch, Dink could see directly into the nest. It was woven of twigs, pine needles, and bits of dead leaves.

Josh trained his binoculars on the other tree. He adjusted the focus by turning a little wheel between the two eyepieces.

Chapter2

Peregrines are an endangered species.

* Peregrines = Peregrine falcon 날개와 등이 검고 가슴이 밝은 큰 새.

 

Mother and father falcons are fierce!

* fierce 사나운, 거친, 난폭한

 

Josh smirked.

* smirk 다른 사람이 모르는 어떤 행동을 해서 만족이나 기쁨을 나타내는 웃음. 그런 웃음을 짓다.

- I don’t like the way he winks and smirks at me whenever he sees me.

 

But who would do something like that?

하지만 누가 그런 짓을 하겠어?

 

Chapter3

Josh was shooting basket at a hoop nailed to the barn door.

Josh는 농구에서 득점했다.

* nailed to ~에 못박힌

 

A man wearing jeans and a flannel shirt was standing under the falcons’ tree, looking up into the branches.

 

Josh knelt next to a patch of tangled weeds. Slowly he parted the stalks with his fingers. A brown bird was hunched in the weeds.

After the second helping, he stopped fussing and closed his eyes.

Chapter5

Most of them were surrounded by trees and thick shrubbery. 빽빽한 키 작은 나무들. 관목들

 

*pickup truck: 짐칸의 덮개가 없는 소형 트럭

A gravel driveway cut through the trees, leading to a small cabin.

자갈을 깐 driveway가 나무들을 관통했다. 작은 오두막으로 이어지며.

Sounds like I owe you an apology, Josh.

Her face was blank, but her eyes made the kids hurry away.

Josh snitched one of Ruth Rose carrot sticks.

Just because Grace Lockwood reads magazines about falcons doesn’t mean she goes around robbing nests.

The kids watched as Grace carefully snipped the plastic scissors.

The think wooden gate was closed, but the lock had been shattered. 부셔졌다. 손상되었다.

Grace Lockwood is still at the top of my list.

 

 

Chapter8

Someone loves this book so much they wore the binding right off.

 

Dink typed in the new word, and the list shortened. 짧아졌다.

 

The title was Peregrine Falcons: Royal Raptors. 신의있는 맹금류

 

They huddled together on a bench and quickly turned pages.

그들은 옹기종기 모였다.

 

The book talked about how peregrine falcons had nearly been wiped out because of pesticides

It says they mate for life.

 

Mrs. Mackleroy tapped her pencil on her desk. 가볍게 두드렸다.

Chapter9

Josh filled him in on how he’d been watching the falcon’s nest.

Through the window, they could see him and Grace putting a cast on a dog’s leg.

Some vets get called out in the middle of the night! 소집된다.

Josh stared at her until Dink gave him a little shove.

Chapter10

Let’s try to get that window flap open again.

다시 창문 덮개를 열도록 시도하자.

 

Dink and Josh hoisted Ruth Rose up to the window. She shoved against the flap.

Dink와 Josh는 Ruth Rose를 창문까지 들어 올렸다. 그녀는 flap(덮개)을 밀었다.

 

They tried pushing against the door, but it too was solidly locked.

그들은 그 문을 밀기를 시도했다. 하지만 그 문은 너무나 견고하게 잠겨 있었다.

I think we owe you kids an explanation. Grace isn’t a vet. She’s an undercover agent with the Department of Environmental Protection. She was assigned to Green Lawn for one reason: to keep an eye on our falcon population.
