[a to z] The Missing Mummy
드디어 또 한권을 끝냈다! A to Z 시리즈를 읽으면서 느끼는건 작가가 참 유쾌한 사람이라는 거다. 24권을 다 끝내고, 언젠가는 책을 두 세번 읽을 날을 기대하며 새로운 책을 또 시작하기로 결심한다. 표현 정리하는 양은 줄지 않는 것 같지만 사전을 찾아도 이해가 안되는 표현은 조금 줄은 것 같기도 하다.
Chapter1
They were just in time to see the wall slide shut.
My dad’s been trying to get the barn cleaned out.
Then the sign flashed the time: It was nearly two o’clock.
* flashed the time: 시간을 전송하다. = move fast, show quickly
Inside the museum was air-conditioned and quiet.
Ruth Rose took a map from a rack just inside the door.
* rack: 선반,
He was wearing a tan jacket and shorts, knee socks, laced boots, and a white helmet.
Today, I’ll take you on journey to ancient Egypt.
If you are afraid of mummies, now’s the time to speak up.
A hush fell over the group.
*hush: 정적
The survivors prepared the dead for burial.

What you see is the burial tomb.
Chapter2
The other two were leaning upright against the walls to either side.
Dr. Tweed said in a hushed voice.

An ancient Egyptian coffin is called a sarcophagus.

The little boy died with his parents, who now stand beside him for eternity.

Each was covered with some kind of cloth, yellowed with age. 오래되어 색이 바랜
Suddenly, a woman with long blond hair who was wearing a baggy dress darted forward.

“Stop!” Dr. Tweed shouted, bolting after the woman.

Everyone in the room began talking at once.
Dr. Tweed looked flustered.

I will schedule another mummy day for next week.

Kids mumbled, “No fair” as they filed out. 그들이 줄줄이 나가면서
This is so bogus.
*bogus: 가짜의, 진실이 아닌, 합법적이지 않은
The door to the ladies’ room opened, and a smartly dressed woman with short dark hair stepped out.
*smartly 말쑥하게, 약간 정장식으로
Suddenly, the restroom door crashed open.
Chapter3
Dink dashed over to them.
Dink는 급히 그들에게 다가갔다.
Dr. Tweed, will you step in with me, please?
In plain sight? 명백한 곳에? 잘 보이는 곳에?
I wonder where the thief went after she left the mummy in the rest room.
And if she’d come through the door, she would have bumped right into us.

He pressed the stone and the door rumbled open.
The other two mummies stood guard over the room.

Ruth Rose grabbed Dink and Dink and pointed them toward the treasure chamber. Without speaking, the three tiptoed under the arch.

His arms suddenly bristled with goose bumps.

You might have set off an alarm when you touched the case.

I’ve always dreamed of being locked in a room full of gold. But now that I am, I’d rather be home.

She had opened a small door cut into the stone wall. 끼어들다. 침범하다.

Then he lay down, and they all drifted off to sleep.

Suddenly, a huge blast shook the room.

Dink, Josh, and Ruth Rose bolted up out of a sound sleep.

Dink opened the closet door a crack, then pulled it shut again.
They wouldn’t bomb the place to rescue us.

Dink nudged the door open a crack. He peered through the floating dust, then suddenly scooted back.

Two large hunks of stone lay on top of broken glass.

As Dink, Josh, and Ruth Rose stepped out of the closet, the alarm bell stopped as suddenly as it had started.

A second later, Officer Peters and Washington stormed into the treasure chamber.

A large, jagged hole had been blown through one of the walls. Through it, Dink could see the tall, thick shrubbery behind the museum. 크고 들쭉날쭉한 구멍이 한 벽을 뚫고 날아갔다.

We were trying to find the mummy snatcher!

In all the confusion, someone hid a small bomb near the wall.

Chapter6
Josh growled and wiggled his eyebrows.
Josh 투덜거렸다.
Bags of cement and a stack of cinder blocks stood nearby. 벽돌 무더기
Maybe they had a getaway car waiting.

They were in a hurry. I can’t see them taking the time to dig a hole.

Josh, my folks are still freaked about the bomb. I promised I’d get right home after the museum today.

He swiveled his head, like a periscope looking for enemy ships.

Dink heard her grunt as she lugged the loaded dish container into the kitchen.

“What’s the matter?” Ruth Rose asked Dink, who was staring after the departing woman.

Chapter8
Aunt Freda beamed at Dink.
On the other side of the swinging door, the smell of frying potatoes hung heavy in the air.
Against one wall stood a pile of crates bulging with raw potatoes.

As she stooped over a pile of potatoes, Dink imagined her stooped over a case of Egyptian gold.

“Come over here,” she said, leading the kids to a deep-fry machine.
From the corner of his eye, Dink saw Josh scoop something off the kitchen floor and shove it in his pocket.

She pointed her chin at a coatrack by the one of the pegs.

They paid for their food and started for the door.

The kids popped the candies into their mouths as they hurried back to their bus stop.

Chapter9
One by one, they stepped out of their coffins and shuffled toward him.
하나씩 하나씩, 그들은 그들의 관에서 나와

The mummies’ cloth wrappings had come loose and were encircling his body, like tentacles.

But after the blast, the smallest coffin - the one for the child- was closed.
Josh reached for a piece of Ruth Rose’s toast, but she slapped his hand.
If the robbers didn’t have a car waiting, and if the gold was too heavy to carry far, maybe they hid it there!
Ruth Rose called the police station and asked for Officer Fallon.
Chapter10
“Officer Washington will nab the young woman in the restaurant,”

Dink, Josh, and Ruth Rose – flanked by the two officers – crossed Main Street and entered the quiet museum.

Officer Peters stepped into the pond had helped Dr. Tweed to his feet.

He leaned the wet thief against a tree and snapped handcuffs onto his dripping wrists.

He lugged out the gym bag, filled with Egyptian treasure and pond water.
He wrung pond water from his dripping pant legs.

In all the excitement, I’ve forgotten what day this is.
