He became inspired to write the song when he met a Civil War soldier who was holding a folded, ragged American flag.

 

As traveling performers, George and his family rarely stayed in one place for very long.

 

In the years to come he wrote many hits, including “I’m a Yankee Doodle Dandy” and “Give My Regards to Broadway.”

 

Many mourned him, including President Roosevelt, who sent the following wire message, “A beloved figure is lost to our national life.”
