처음으로 스펀지밥 시리즈의 chapter book을 읽었다. 스펀지밥 picture book 시리즈는 조금 잔인하거나 징그러운 면이 있었는데 chapter book은 그런 것 같지는 않았다. 오히려 교훈적인 내용을 해학적으로 표현했다고 느꼈다. 나는 처음에는 뒤의 단어 설명을 보면서 스스로 읽고 이후에는 사전의 도움을 받아서 다시 읽었다. 첫번째로 읽을 때는 책 내용을 완전히 소화하지 못했고 두번째에는 너무 공부하듯이 읽어서 스펀지밥의 특유의 웃음거리를 제대로 느끼지 못한것 같다. 나의 영어 실력이 더 향상 된다면 만화책 읽듯이 스펀지밥 chapter book을 재미있게 읽을 수 있을것 같다. 그 날을 기대하며 이번 책도 여기서 끝마친다.
표현 정리
What a super sailoriffic-sunshiney day!
*sailor: 선원, 뱃사람
The sun was shining, the water shimmering, and the scallops were chirping.
* shimmer 희미하게 빛나다.
“I have a funny feeling I’ve forgotten to do something.” SpongeBob thought hard. Then he brightened.
* brightened: 걱정스러워 보이다가 다시 안색이 밝아지다.
I was just about to leave for work when I remembered I hadn’t called you today.
나는 지금 막 일하러 갈 참이었는데, 내가 오늘 너에게 전화하지 않은 게 기억났어.
*when:
예) He was walking back to his flat when he heard an explosion.
주어가 ~하던 중에 주어는 ~를 했다. 동시에 일어난 두 가지 사건을 연결함. 특히 과거의 ‘주어가 동사하는 중이었을 때 주어가 ~했다(while he was working, he often listened to music)’라는 형태로도 쓰임. 그리고 as, when, while와 같은 절이 주절의 앞에 오면 종속절 뒤에는 comma를 붙인다.
예2) when you open the file, check the second page.

예3) I eat ice cream when I am on holiday.
= at the same time
예4) just를 사용하여 어떤 것들이 정확히 동시에 일어났음을 표현 할 수 있다.

SpongeBob made one final vow as to how deeply he loved his mother, and he set off for the Krusty Krab.

SpongeBob was lost in thought as he walked along the edge of a deep trench.

Someone was sitting at the edge of the trench with his head buried in his arms and his knees drawn up to his chest.

How could anyone be so unhappy when he himself was so happy?
The each thing SpongeBob named, the man’s shoulders slumped lower and lower.

What’s all the ruckus? 웬 소동이야?

“I wanted you to be the first to hear,” said SpongeBob, talking so fast he could barely get the words out.
*the first to hear 제일 먼저 듣는 사람.

Mother’s Day is two weeks away, and we’re going to be swamped!
엄마의 날이 두 주 밖에 남지 않았어.
* swamped 많은 사람들이 쇄도하는, 밀려오는 (그래서 바쁠것임)
I’m sorry, Mr. Krabs. You know I love being a fry cook more that anything in the world. But this is the opportunity of a lifetime.
The show is sure to bomb.

Squidward chuckled gleefully at the thought.
Squidward는 그 생각에 매우 기뻐 낄낄거렸다.

* disgruntled: 불만인, 언짢은 = unhappy, annoyed, and disappointed about sth

You think that he will be able to give members of our studio audience homespun advice?
* homespun: 단순하고 일상적인, practical 예) homespun wisdom
She nearly burned the studio to the ground.
그녀는 거의 작업장(연습실, 방송실)을 완전히 태웠지.
Sam Sandollar waved his hand as if to dismiss all doubts.
Sam Sandollar는 마치 모든 의심들을 떨쳐버리기라도 하듯 그의 손을 흔들었다.
* dismiss = not consider 어떤 것이 중요하지 않고 고려할 가치가 없다고 결정하다/ send away
There was a good deal of grumbling as the meeting ended.

I am going to give members of the studio audience homespun advice!
He had just noticed SpongeBob holding a set of knitting needles, which were moving so fast they were a blur.

“Gee, thanks, SpongeBob,” said Patrick gratefully, going over to the mirror to admire his new scarf.

An oven timer had gone off.

Mr. Krabs stood glumly below the television set that was mounted on the wall of the Krusty Krab.

His customers had demanded that Mother Know Best be turned on every day, so they could watch it while they ate.
On today’s show SpongeBob was demonstrating how to remove stubborn pet stains.

Mr. Krabs exclaimed to Squidward.

Mr. Krabs skittered into his office and closed the door.

SpongeBob sat in his dressing room while an assistant worked away at powdering his face. Patrick lounged on a nearby sofa eating a chocolate ice-cream cone.

And with those words, he burst into loud, gushing sobs.

SpongeBob, you have to pull yourself together! 마음을 가다듬다. 진정하다.
“Who cares about

SpongeBob.
It’s no use! What’s the point if my mother isn’t proud of me!”
다 소용없어! 엄마가 나를 자랑스러워 하지 않는다면 뭐가 중요해!
“Keep it together, man! The show must go on!” he thought desperately for a way to convince SpongeBob.
이 녀석아 정신차려!

But the show was a disaster. The soufflé did not rise.
하지만 그 show는 완전한 실패였다.

Up in the control room Sam was having a fit.

They’ll be furious!

Another flop! 또다른 실패작이군!
Sam grabbed his cell phone and speed-dialed his mother.
A few of them snickered and pointed, but he ignored them.

SpongeBob sat dully in front of the camera.
멍하니 앉아 있었다
“If I thought my mom cared, I would make her a hat out of a margarine tub for a Mother’s Day present, like this.” He sniffed a little bit.

Members of the audience were starting to look at their watches and to nod off to sleep.

“Leave it plain. Or else, stick stuff on it like this,” he continued in a monotone, ….

Something offstage had caught SpongeBob’s eye.
All the TV cameras swiveled toward her, and them hurriedly swiveled back to record SpongeBob’s surprised expression.

He sprang up from his chair and flew toward his mother’s waiting arms. The two embraced as the audience erupted in cheers.

Even Squiward, who had been watching the show from behind the cash register, quickly wiped away a tear.

He skittered out of his office and into the dining area toward his mother.

SpongeBob looked over at his mother lovingly, then turned to Sam.

Suddenly Mr. Krabs was all business again. “You can start by swabbing the decks and refilling the ketchup dispensers!
