Monster Manners

 

 

 

아이들에게 예절의 중요성을 가르치지 좋은 책이다.

 

Monsters are supposed to fight with their friends and break each other’s toys.

 

Her father found this very upsetting.

• Find: 어떤 사람에 대해 특정한 방식으로 생각하거나 느끼다.

 

Monsters are supposed to chew up rocks to show how fierce they are.

After one bite, Rosie would stop crunching and run for her toothbrush.

She didn’t like the way the bits of rock got stuck between her teeth.

 

“How will she get along in the world?” asked her mother.

 

While they were talking, Rosie’s best friend, Prunella, came by. 지나갔다.

 

“Let’s try something else. Maybe you’re better at table manners.”

 

How gross! 천박해라!

 

When she asked Prunella to pass the salt, she forgot again and said “Please.”

 

“You’re not even trying,” she said.

Prunella decided to give Rosie one more chance.

“We’ll drop in on my uncle Ned.”

• Drop in on: ~에게 들리다.

 

Prunella behaved perfectly for a monster. First she rang the doorbell ten times without stopping.

 

He was horrified. 공포에 휩싸이다. 충격을 받다.

 

Prunella threw up her hands. “I did my best, Rosie,” she said. “I can’t do anymore.”

• Throw up ~을 들어올리다.

 

Rosie hung her head and followed Prunella. For the first time, Rosie realized how unhappy she had made everyone. And now she felt unhappy, too.

• Hung her head 고개를 숙였다.

 

A pipe had broken and water was pouring everywhere.

 

We’re getting flooded.

 

Roise’s mother called the plumber and growled into the phone. The plumber hung up.

Prunella tried too, but the same thing happened.

 

They were getting nowhere, and the water getting deeper. Something had to be done.

• Get nowhere 성과가 없다. 아무런 진보도 이루지 못하다.

 

Without thinking, she dialed the phone and said in a nice voice, “Hello. We have a leak at the Monster’s house. Can you come over please?”

 

I’ll be right there.

 

After the plumber had left and everything was back to normal,

Rosie’s mother turned to Rosie’s father. 에게 말하기 시작하다.

 

“Rosie’s strange manners do come in handy sometimes.”

• Come in handy: 쓸모 있다. 유용하다.

 

We’re lucky to have her.

 

“Mind your manners, dear,” called Rosie’s mother from the window.
