Ali Baba and The Forty Thieves

• Ali Baba : 가난한 나무꾼이지만 우연한 기회에 40명의 도적들을 본 뒤로 운명이 바뀐다. 

• Kasim :알리바바의 형으로 부유한 상인이다. 알리바바에게 보물이 숨겨진 동굴에 대해 듣고 보물을 훔치러 갔다가 죽임을 당한다.

• Morgiana : 카심의 충성스러운 여자 하인이었다. 그러나 카심이 죽임을 당한 뒤로 알리바바의 하인이 되어 알리바바가 위험에 처할 때 마다 지혜로운 방법으로 구해준다.

• Gamal :40인의 도적들 사이의 우두머리이다. 카심에 이어 알리바바를 죽이기 위해 노력한다. 그러나 몰지아나에 의해 되려 부하들을 잃고 이후에는 자신의 목숨도 잃는다.

• Mustafa: 금을 필요로하는 재단사이다. 어둠 속에서도 직물이나 물건을 꿰멜수 있다. 몰지아나의 요청에 눈을 가린 채로 카심의 절단된 몸을 꿰메준다. 이후에는 도적들이 알리바바의 집을 찾는데 도움을 준다.

One day, Ali Baba spotted a band of horsemen galloping into the woods. They had daggers and looked dangerous.

Gallop: 말을 타고 질주하다.

“Open Sesame!” cried their leader and a hole appeared in the rock.

He was scared of the men.

After a long wait, he saw the rock open again. He counted the men as they hurried out. There were 40 of them!

Ali Baba slid down from his tree.

He tried the magic words.

The cave was crammed with treasure. ~으로 가득찼다.

Those men must b thieves!

The rock slid open and he darted out. 돌진하다. 날쌔게 움직이다.

Ali Baba’s wife was stunned to see his bags full of gold instead of wood.

She ran to Kasim’s house and asked to borrow his wife’s scales. Kasim’s wife wondered why.

Secretly, she smeared some wax on the scales before handing them over.

Smeared: ~을 칠했다. 발랐다.

hand them over: ~을 넘겨주다. 양도하다.

She showed it to Kasim.

He was dazzled by all the treasure. ~이 굉장히 좋고 훌륭하다고 생각하다.

He stuffed his bags full, then turned to leave.

Kasim was trapped. Worse still, he could hear voices outside. He wanted to hide, but the was frozen with fear.

• was trapped: 갖혔다.

• Worse still, 더 나쁘게도,

She went to Ali Baba’s house in tears. 눈물을 흘리며

Morning came and there was still no sign of Kasim.

He went to ask Kasim’s loyal servant, Morgiana, for help. 충성스러운 하인

Morgiana went straight to Mustafa the tailor. “I need you to sew up something in secret,” she said. “I’ll pay you well, but you must let me blindfold you.”

• in secret: 남몰래

• blindfold: 눈을 가리다

Soon Ali Baba was able to bury his brother in one piece. He pretended that Kasim had died of an illness.

“The other day I even sewed up a body while blindfolded!”

• the other day = a few days ago

“What’s this cross for?” she wondered. “I think something fishy is going on …” she drew crosses on the doors of nine other houses, so Alibaba’s didn’t stand out.

“I can show you where our enemy lives,” he said. He took Gamal to Ali Baba’s street… only to find ten doors marked instead of one.

Before long, Gamal had hatched a plan.

• Hatch: 부화하다. 계획이나 음모를 꾸미다.

“I want 37 of you to hide in the jars,” he told his men. “You two fools better find another boss.”

“Come in and make yourself at home,” said Ali Baba.

Carefully, she tipped sizzling oil into all 37 jars. One by one, the thieves spluttered and died.

• Sizzling: 지글지글 소리를 내는, 매우 뜨거운

• Splutter: 지지직 소리를 내다. 흥분으로 지껄이다.

• All clear: 이상 없음

He panicked and fled. 달아났다. Flee의 과거

He thought of nothing but killing Ali Baba.

While he was plotting, he decided to sell some of the treasure. He dressed up as a businessman and set up a market stall.

Gamal found himself face to face with his enemy.

All went well… until Ali Baba offered him salt. In Persia, it was very unlucky to harm someone if you’d eaten their salt.

Quickly, she changed into dancing clothes.

Her dance was greeted with claps and cheers.

Gamal fumbled for his purse.

As Gamal looked down, she took her dagger and stabbed him.

“How can I ever repay you?”

“We’ll have the wedding of the year. And there’s a cave full of treasure to pay for it.”
