Horrid Henry 시리즈는 사악하지만 총명한 Henry가 문제를 어떻게 해결하는지에 있다. 이 책에서는 다음 두가지 사항을 유념해서 읽으면 더욱더 재미있을 것이다.

Miss Battle-Axe fixed him with her steely eyes.
*fix s1 with = keep sb in sight ~를 지켜보다.

Henry slumped in his chair, scowling.
*slump: 급락하다 reduce suddenly / 털썩 주저앉다. 쿵 떨어지다. Sit or fall heavily and suddenly
*scowl 누군가를 매우 험악한 표정으로 쳐다보다
Sports Day dawned bright and sunny.
*dawn: 날이나 어떤 시기가 시작되다. Begin; Next morning dawned bright and warm.
Henry leapt at him, roaring.
Henry는 그에게 덤벼들었다.
*roar: 고함치다,
At least he could scoff something good while the others were stuck eating dried-up old orange pieces.
* scoff 비웃다, 조롱하다. Laugh / 어떤 것을 매우 빠르고 열정적으로 먹다. Eat
I expect I’ll win my egg-and-spoon race again. But of course it doesn’t matter if I don’t. It’s how you play that counts.
If Henry heard that disgusting phrase once more he would start frothing at the mouth.
*froth at the mouth: 입에 거품을 물다.
Henry’s blood boiled. He felt like snatching those eggs and hurling them against the wall.
* snatch 가로채다, 낚아채다. Take quickly
* hurl = throw
There was no time to lose crowing about his brilliance.
*crow: 환성을 지르다, ~을 자랑하다 = talk proudly
*brilliance 훌륭한 능력, 탁월함,
.., who tucked it safely in his school bag.
*tuck: 밀어 넣다, store safely
“Who wants to race anyway?” sneered Horrid Henry, sneaking a yummy gummy fuzz-ball into his mouth.
*sneer 빈정거리다.
* gummy 진득진득한, 고무의
They lurched wildly, left and right, then toppled over.
* lurch 비틀거리다,
* topple 균형을 잃고 쓰러지다. Lose balance and fall down
* Weepy William 지나치게 감상적인, 눈물에 젖은,
Rude Ralph and Horrid Henry shrieked with laughter.
* shriek with laughter 매우 깔깔거리며 웃다.
Horrid Henry could hardly contain himself. This was the best Sports Day he’d ever been to.
* could hardly contain himself 그 자신을 억제하기 힘들었다.
Henry heaved his heavy bones to the starting line.
* heave 몸을 일으키다, 무거운 것을 들어올리다.
The racers paused to pounce on the treats.
* pounce on ~을 덮치다. = 열정을 가지고 어떤 것을 재빨리 받아들이다. Accept / 비난하다.
While the others munched and crunched, Henry made a frantic dash for the lead.
* munch 시끄럽게 먹다
* make a dash for ~을 향해 돌진하다.
* the finishing line 결승선
* gob-stopper 입을 멈추게 만들 정도로 맛있는 캔디
Aerobic Al hesitated, then skidded to a halt and picked it up. He could beat Henry any day so why not show off a bit? Suddenly Henry sprinted past. Aerobic Al dashed after him.
* sprint 전속력으로 달리다.
“I can’t think how you got those eggs muddled up,” said Mum.
“Never mind, Peter,” said Henry brightly. “It’s not winning, it’s how you play that counts.”
