영어 책을 꾸준히 읽어온지도 벌써 1년이 지났다. 처음에 도서관에서 내가 책을 빌리면 사람들은 당연히 나에게 아이가 있다고 생각하는 것 같았다. 심지어 나에게 '어머님'이라는 말을 하는 직원도 있었다. 그 때만 해도 내가 읽는 책이 너무 글씨가 크고 어린이들 용이라 밖에서는 부끄러워 읽지도 못했던 것 같다. 읽는 책의 대부분이 유아용 그림책이었기에. 그런데 이제는 (여전히 부끄럽지만) 심심하면 가방에서 책을 꺼내 읽어보곤 한다. 분명 나보다 훨씬 두껍고 글씨가 작은 책을 읽는 사람들을 심심치 않게 보지만, 나는 다만 나의 작은 성장이 감개무량하다. 아직도 먼 길을 가야 하지만 그럼에도 1년을 잘 버텼다고 나에게 말해주고 싶다. 이렇게 꾸준히 하다보면 졸업을 할 때 쯤이면 3단계의 책을 읽고 있고, 박사를 졸업할 때면 7단계 책을 읽을 수 있겠지.

 

When the fist spooky thing happened, I didn’t even realize it was spooky. I don’t know why, because I happen to like spooky things…unless they’re really scary I mean, in which case maybe not so much. 그렇게 무섭지만 많다면

 

If I had known what it really was, I probably wouldn’t have been so casual.

 

And that’s where I noticed some more goofy stuff.

 

Had some kid sneaked in to play pranks on me?

 

The look on my dad’s face told me he still wasn’t buying it.

 

There was no longer any doubt about it. We had a poltergeist. A poltergeist is like a ghost. A ghost that likes to cause trouble.

Flapjacks began cooking on the stove.

The very tall stack of dishes teetered in one direction, then in the other.

Oh, I don’t want to spend the night in some strange motel room.

…..

On the other hand I hear those Ramada Inns can be really nice.

다시 생각해보니 Ramada Inns이 괜찮을 수 있다고 전해 들은 것 같아요.

I was thinking so hard about ghosts that I must have totally tuned out what we were doing in class.

But some invisible force is wrecking my dad’s apartment.

Anybody who believes in ghosts is a superstitious barfbag.

We have ghosts the way some people have cockroaches.

Then what you want is a banishing ritual.

* banish 어떤 사람을 멀리 보내서 들어오지 못하게 하다. 추방하다. 어떤 것을 완전히 제거하다.

 

In that case, it would understand us. I was in line behind a big kid who also had a load of books on ghosts and evil spirits.

 

I wasn’t all that hot to talk to dead guys, especially evil ones. But I felt it was our only hope.

내가 그렇게 죽은 녀석들과 이야기 하고 싶은 건 아니야.

“What is this stuff?” my dad croaked. 침울한 목소리로 말했다, 쉰 목소리로 말하다,

 

This is what they call ectoplasm. It’s something that appears when there are spirits around.

* ectoplasm 귀신을 둘러싸고 있다고 여겨지는 물질.

 

I felt horrible for my dad and what had happened to his nice apartment.

 

I knew I had to take charge.

The skin on my head and on my back and neck began to tingle.

The quarter I was holding turned tingly and disintegrated. Then there was a blinding flash.

A glob of ectoplasm landed on my cheek 

 

The haze lifted.

연기, 안개.

 

You may address me as Cecil. And by what name shall I address you, sir?

 

I am pleased to make your acquaintance, Zack. But whom have you brought with you?

I guess those two have hit it off.

 

The scribbling and rearranging of Cheerios skidded to a stop. 미끄러져 멈추다.

 

Your friend Cecil is a snob.

How about we move in with you Zack?

 

What about the two of us residing with Vernon?

 

Well, they’ve got a haunted house in it that is really pathetic. It couldn’t even scare a five-year-old. But a couple of pros like you could really whip it into shape in no time. Why, after you two start haunting it, I’ll bet that place could scare the daylights out of anybody.

Everybody thinks the people who run Adventureland just dreamed up some new spooky tricks. But I know who’s really behind it.
