삶의 어느 순간에선가 조금씩은 배운 내용들. 하지만 책으로 읽으니 또 색다른 느낌이다. 시험을 보기 위해 교과서를 공부하는 것과 순수한 호기심에서 책을 읽는 건 분명 다른 느낌인 것 같다. 후자가 더 많은 생각의 기회를 주는 것 같다.

Woods or Forest? A woods is a smaller forest.

Types of forests: (1) tropical, (2) boreal, (3) temperate forest.

Temperate forests are mostly in North America, Asia, and Europe.

*그래서 만약 내가 여행을 간다면 나는 적도 부근으로 가서 tropical forest를 보고 싶다.

 

What is a forest?

-       Plenty of trees and other plant life

-       The plants grow in layers.

-       Litter layer: made of plants such as moss and lichens

-       Fern layer: 깃털처럼 긴 줄기와 긴 잎을 가진 녹색 식물로 꽃을 피우지 않음. Ferns & herbs

-       Shrub layer: it reaches just a few meters from the ground.

-       Understory: it made of younger, smaller trees than are found in the canopy.

-       Canopy: it covers the other layers.

 

A temperate forest

-       The four seasons are easy to tell apart

-       The climate is not extreme.

-       The soil is rich and fertile.

 

Two main types of a temperate forest

-       Deciduous forest: is known for its autumn colors.

-       Coniferous forest: is known for its evergreen trees.

 

*fauna: 특정 지역에 서식하는 동물군

*flora: trees, shrubs, and other plants

 

Decomposers such as worms, bacteria, and fungi

 

Feces: 배설물, 대변

In a forest, much of the food for animals is found in the shrub layer of plants. Animals eat the fruit of the plants, and then the seeds are placed throughout the forest in the animals’ feces. It’s nature’s very own fertilizer!

 

궁금증: energy pyramid에서 level이 올라갈수록 energy가 감소한다고 한다. 그런데 이 부분이 잘 이해가 안된다. 아, 어떤 측면에서는 상위 level이 있을수록 energy 효율이 감소하기 때문에 다양한 식물과 동물로부터 양분을 얻어야 하는 것인가? 반면에 하위 level에 있는 유기체는 적은 음식만으로도 살아갈 수 있다. 그러므로 번식하기 쉽다.

 

The cambium layer is the part that lets a tree grow.

The sapwood is the newest wood of the tree.

The core of the tree is called the heartwood.

 

Storms may topple trees.

* topple 쓰러지다. 앞으로 고꾸라지다.

 

As flood waters recede, plant and animal life adapts to the changed landscape.

* recede 멀어지다. 감소하다, 후퇴하다.

 

It is almost as though the job of a forest is to live and grow.
