The Zack Files) Dr. Jekyll, Orthodontist

 

지킬앤 하이드에서 영감을 얻어서 쓰여진 책 같다. 이 책에서는 Zack의 교정 치료를 담당한 교정과 의사가 신약을 개발하는 과정에서 괴물로 변한다. 그리고 이 사실을 알게된 Zack 이 문제를 해결해준다.

나는 여전히 시간을 내서 영어 책을 읽고 모르는 단어를 찾아보며 공부를 한다. 그런데 사람들은 나의 공부방법이 잘못되었다고 한다. 나는 유학을 가려고 하고 그러기 위해서는 학문적인 용어들이 나오는 시험을 봐야 하기 때문이다. 시험에 나올 것만 공부하기. 효율성 측면에서는 그게 더 맞을지도 모르겠다. 하지만 언어적인 측면에서는 초등학생 들이 읽는 동화책도 읽지 못하는데 대학생 혹은 대학원생들이 읽는 글을 잘 읽을 수 있다고 생각하지 않는다. 그럼에도 불구하고 나는 더이상 언어에 민감한, 그래서 자연스럽게 언어를 습득할 수 있는 나이가 아니기에 나의 노력이 헛될지도 모른다는 불안감은 지울 수 없다. 결국 최선의 방법은 둘 다 하는 것인데 시간상 가능한지 잘 모르겠다. 그냥 미친척하고 공부에 매진해야 하는 것일까.

I was telling a huge fib.

I’d better drop it. Dr. Jekyll was starting to get worked up.

I took a sip. I swished it around in my mouth.

When I was in the waiting room, I looked through Dr. Jekyll’s file cabinet.

I am sure it will prove to you that Dr. Jekyll is weird. And up to no good.

It’s no reason to swipe the man’s diary.

Dr. Jekyll wants to guard against side effects.

And they can’t afford a hotel. And he’s doing them a favor by letting them stay there.

 

See. The writing gets all wobbly here. And then it just kind of dribbles off the page.

I broke out in a big grin.

We had to print out names and the time we entered.

Dad put down “Edward Hyde and son.”

From somewhere we could hear the soft trickle of running water.

Each group had built a beaver lodge in a pool of water with small trees around it.

They were having trouble gnawing the branches.

The ends of the branches were sort of shredded.

The roof looked like it was ready to cave in.

Beavers were never meant to have straight teeth.

Miracle Mouthwash may straighten teeth on beavers. But it does the opposite to humans.

 

It was no use trying to talk to Dr. Jekyll.
