Handa’s surprising day

Handa라는 소녀가 친구 집에 갔다가 돌아오는 길에 생긴 이야기들에 대한 책이다. Handa는 머리위에 과일 담는 바구니를 올려 놓고 길을 간다. 그 과정에서 동물들이 과일을 훔쳐 가기도 하지만 나무 위에서 과일이 떨어져 새로운 과일로 과일바구니가 채워 지기도 한다.

 

Flap.. flap..

Two big spotty butterflies flew past. 얼룩투성이의 나비 두 마리가 날아 지나갔다.

 

Maybe she’s under the grain store.

They peeped under the grain store. 살짝 보다. 들여다보다.

 

Three tiny mice were nibbling grains of sweetcorn.

 

Five green and orange sunbirds were sipping juice from the flowers.

 

I want to find Mondi. Let’s go down to the waterhole. She may have gone for a drink.

사막지역에서 동물들이 물을 마시는 물웅덩이.

 

Slurp… slurp..

There were eight big birds with bills like spoons. They were slurping water from the lake.

새의 부리(beak)

 

Maybe a spoonbill ate her. Or maybe a lion gobbled her up. 모조리 먹어 치우다.

 

Peck.. peck.

Nine cheeky starlings were stealing sweetcorn from a field.

Cheeky 건방진 = 약간 웃긴 방식으로 무례한

 

Cheep… cheep. 삐악삐악.

It’s coming from under that bush. Shall we peep?

 

“I wonder which fruit my friend will like best?”

 

Handa didn’t see a thing.

 

Will the orange be Akeyo’s favorite? Thought Handa.

The zebra peeped out and snatched… the orange. 잡아채다. 낚아채다.

 

It had great big flappy ears.. and a trunk. 축늘어진

 

Handa wondered if Akeyo would like the pineapple best.

 

Will she like the passion-fruit best?

 

The goat charged after Handa.

The goat charged at Handa.

Charge ~을 향하여 돌진하다.

 

It shook its long horns and the rope around its neck. It wanted to butt Handa – to hit her with its head.

Butt: 머리[뿔]로 받다.

 

Cross and dusty, it ran to butt Handa.

But it skidded on the squashed avocado and landed in a prickly bush. 가시가 많은

Skidded 미끄러졌다 (네가 통제할 수 없게 표면을 따라 미끄러지다)

 

Handa was way in front now. She saw a large yellow “lump” poking out of the grass by the path.

 

Handy was half way home now.

 

Plunk! 쿵!

Its legs waved in the air.
