요약

Abdel이라는 불량배가 책 속의 주인공의 간식을 빼앗아 먹는다. 처음에 주인공은 Abdel이 가난하기 때문에 자신의 간식을 나눠줄 수 있다고 생각한다. 그러나 Abdel이 고맙다는 말도 없고, 점차 자신이 협박하자 학교에서의 휴식 시간이 불편해 진다. 그러던 중 주인공의 단짝 친구(Pierrick)가 이 사실을 알아차리고 다시는 주인공의 친구의 간식을 빼앗지 말라고 협박을 한다.

그 이후에 Abdel은 주인공의 간식을 더 이상 빼앗지 않는다. 하지만 주인공은 Abdel을 보며 그도 배가 고플 것이라 생각하고 간식을 준다. 하지만 Abdel은 자신은 거지가 아니라며 거절한다. 그러자 주인공이 그럼 Abdel도 주인공에게 무언가를 주면 된다고 이야기한다. 처음에 Abdel은 자신은 줄 것이 없다고 이야기하지만, 이내 무언가를 생각해 낸다. 그리고 선생님께 허락을 받은 후, 다음 날인 토요일에 차를 우릴 수 있는 도구들을 가져와 반 아이들 모두에게 페퍼민트 차를 제공한다. 그 이후 그 학급 아이들은 토요일마다 페퍼민트 차를 마시게 된다. 그리고 주인공은 자신이 간식으로 먹던 Two jumbo chocolate croissants 대신에 three chocolate croissants을 선택한다. 주인공, Pierrick, Abdel가 모두 먹을 수 있도록.

 

감상

난 아직 Fun Read를 두 권밖에 읽지 않았지만 이 시리즈가 참 좋다. 이 책들을 읽으면 초등학생 때의 일들이 속속들이 떠오른다. 그리고 나 또한 초등학생 시절로 돌아가는 것 같다. 나는 어렸을적에 이렇게 지혜롭게 문제를 풀 수 있는 책들을 많이 읽지 못한것 같다. 만약 내가 이런 책들을 많이 읽었다면 세상을 좀 더 지혜롭게 살 수 있었을지도 모른다는 생각을 한다. 한편으로는 지금이라도 이런 책들을 읽을 수 있어서 너무 다행이라는 생각이 든다.

특히 Fun Read 단계2 시리즈는 Reader's book을 읽는 사람들에게 적합한 책인것 같다. Reader's book수준의 단어들임에도 문장 표현이 세련되었다고 생각한다. 또한 책의 내용또한 큰 울림을 준다.

Abdel always scared the pants off me.

* scare: 남을 겁먹게 하다. Make a person feel frightened

* the pants off: 심하게, 가차없이

 

The incident took place in the playground during recess.

 

Abdel drew closer and said, “~~~!”

* drew closer 가까이 다가왔다.

 

As I had done him a favor, I expected a ‘Thank you’ in return.

I knew Abdel was not well off, but this time he had gone too far.

* go too far 예의 등이 도를 지나치다.

 

Abdel had no reason to stop, and he did not. ~할 필요를 느끼지 못했다.

 

Every single day, he happily gorged himself on ‘my’ jumbo chocolate croissant.

I would discreetly hand over my croissant to him so that no one could notice.

For the record, Abdel never thanked me.

How could I forget? I was terrified. Yet I could not just back down and let this happen every-day. I had to figure something out.

*Yet 그렇다고 해서?

*back down: 물러나다, 자신의 잘못을 인정하다. 자신이 패배했음을 인정하다.

 

It would be much too humiliating to tell anyone about it. But clearly Abdel was the only one to blame. He robbed me of my jumbo chocolate croissant.

Even so, it was quite an embarrassing confession to make. 그렇기는 하지만,

* embarrassing: 난처한, 당황스러운

 

That is when I figured out that it costs twice the price of a plain croissant to buy a jumbo chocolate croissant. 바로 그때 나는 ~ 알아차렸다.

 

Why have you only brought plain croissants lately? And why have you routinely been giving one to Abdel?

 

All the same, it does not mean that you should bring him his snack.

*all the same: 그 사실에도 불구하고, = despite

 

Pierrick lost his temper. 매우 화를 냈다.

He called Abdel and burst out at him, “Don’t you dare bully him around, you nasty little thief! If you want some snack during recess, you had better bring your own snack! Are we clear?

그는 Abdel를 불러서 그에게 버럭 이야기했다.

* don't you dare: ~할 생각은 하지도 마! (상대방에게 ~행동을 하지 말라고 하는 말)

*bully: 불량배, 자신보다 작고 힘없는 사람을 협박하거나 괴롭히다.

 

Pierrick, too, is as intimidating as a Turkish soldier.

*intimidating: 남을 겁주며

*intimidate: 어떤 사람을 원하는 방식으로 만들기 위해 ~를 겁주다. 위협하다.

 

No one messes with him. 어느 누구도 그를 귀찮게 하지 않았다. (mess with = bother)

 

The next day, I was caught in a dilemma at the bakery. 선택하기 어려운 기로에 놓여있다.

 

What if he really throws a hook at my face? 주먹을 날리다.

I grew anxious as I put the snack into my bag. But in a corner of my mind, it felt good.

 

It felt as though I was getting my revenge. 복수를 하고 있는 기분이었다.

 

Strangely enough, it was not all that fun. Then a thought occurred to me: ‘He must be hungry too.’

* Then a thought occurred to me. 그 때 한가지 생각이 들었다.

 

I drew near him. Having put aside everything he had done to me, I gave him a piece of my snack. 그가 나에게 했던 모든 것은 한쪽에 둔 채(치워버린 채),

 

Abdel muttered in refusal, “Who do you think I am? Some beggar?” Abdel은 거절하며 낮게 중얼거렸다.

 

An awkward silence took over. 어색한 침묵이 흘렀다.

 

Flushed all over, he carried on without a word.

* flush: become red 특정 감정 때문에 얼굴이 붉어지다.

*carry on: 계속하다.

 

For the snack issue, Pierrick and I have come up with a solution. Two jumbo chocolate croissants cost the same as three chocolate croissants.
