Chapter1

Dink squirmed in his seat.

Today it was green, from her T-shirt to her high-tops.

The bus stopped in front of a small gray-shingled building.

They were squinting into the building sunlight when they heard someone say, “Hi, kids!”

It clunked heavily against his leg.

* clunk 무거운 물체가 서로 부딪쳐서 소리를 내다.

 

He swept a pair of boots and a tool belt onto the floor, making room in the backseat. “Pile in!”

 

“What’s this?” Dink plucked a bright green feather off the sole of Josh’s sneaker

The battlements on top reminded Dink of giant’s teeth.

He tugged on the handle, but the door wouldn’t budge. = move

 

Chapter2

She looked the same as Dink remembered: happy smile, curly brown hair, mischievous eyes.

Dink saw a washer and dryer, wooden pegs for hats and coats, and a pile of sneakers and boots.

A black chandelier hung over the table. “This place is humongous!” Dink said.

The mantel was dark wood, carved with all kinds of animals.

Wallis flopped onto a pile of floor cushions.

“See there? I had steps built. … Goodness knows how he got them up this cliff!”

Chapter3

The sea snaked into the dark hole, making a narrow river.

* snake 많은 굴곡과 뒤틀림이 있는 길을 따라 움직이다. = move along a route.

 

They picnicked on chicken sandwiches, apples, chocolate chip cookies, and cold lemonade.

* picnic – picnicked 야외에서 음식을 먹다.

 

Wallis wiped her fingers on a paper napkin.

Lobsters are getting scarce in Maine.

* scarce: 찾기/ 얻기가 쉽지 않은

 

“Sometimes weeks go by and there’s not a peep. Then I’ll hear them for a few days in a row.”

가끔은 몇 주가 지나간다. 그리고

Josh hung his sneakers around his neck and waded along the shore.

*wade along ~을 따라 걷다. 물 속을 헤치며 나아가다.

The boat’s brass and wood trim gleamed in the sunlight.

“To tell you the truth, Dink, this is one mystery that’s got me stumped. If those screams aren’t the ghost of Emory Scott, I don’t know what they are!”

Chapter4

Ruth Rose curtsied. “Enter, my loyal knights!”

 * curtsy: 소녀나 여성이 존경을 표하기 위해 치마를 들고 무릎을 굽혀 인사하다.

 

“His Highness King Dink goes first” Dink said, nudging ahead of Josh. 

 * His Highness 전하

 

They crowded into the room.

* crowd into sth: 어떤 장소를 가득 메우다.

 

Dim light shone through two small windows covered with cobwebs.

* Cobwebs: 거미집들

 

“This place creeps me out,” Josh said.

 이 장소를 나를 진짜 겁나게 해. 의시시하다.

 

“Can we go?” josh pleaded.

“What’s it from?”

 

“You were creeped out by the playhouse, but you want to explore the cave?”

 

The air was cold and damp, and the black wall felt slimy.

 * slimy 끈적끈적한

 

Her voice sounded hollow.

그녀의 목소리에는 영혼이 없는 것 같았다. 속이 빈. 영혼없는 목소리

 

Suddenly a cream echoed through the cave.

 * echo 울려퍼지다.

 

Over their heads, hundreds of black bats steaked for daylight.

* streak: move fast 어딘가를 향해 굉장히 빨리 움직이다.

 

 

 

Chapter5

The kids didn’t stop running till they were at the top of the cliff.

“What was that?” Ruth Rose asked, pulling off her sopping sneakers.

 * pulling off sth ~을 벗기며

* sopping 흠뻑젓은

 

When they got back to the castle, Walker’s jeep was parked out front.

*park 주차시키다,

*out front 집 앞에

 

Wallis, Walker, and Rip were sitting at the long table, husking ears of corn.

“It was great,” Josh said shooting Dink a look.

“Or you can choose another board game from the hall closet. Help yourself.”

He motioned for Dink and Ruth Rose to follow him.

“What exactly are we looking for?” Dink asked.

“A secret door or passageway,” Josh said, rapping his knuckle lightly on a wall.

Dink stood between two granite battlements that were taller than he was.

"It would be neat to fly a kite up here!"

The kids tromped back down to the hall.

*tramp = tromp 무거운 발거름으로 걷다. 터벅터벅 걷다.

 

 A few spiders darted away, but nothing else.

*dart: 날쌔게 움직이다. 

 

Dink charged into the bathroom, holding the tennis racket like a club.

*club: 골프채, 곤봉

 

He used the racket to poke behind the window curtains.

Dink shook his head. “You’re so lame, Josh. It would serve you right if some ghost did get you!”

*serve you right 꼴 좋다. 그래도 싸다

 

Finally, they gave up, sweaty and dusty.

 * sweaty 땀투성이의, * dusty 먼지투성이의

 

“Just let one try!”

 Then he saw it – a ghostly light near the playhouse.

 They looked behind the radiators and inside plant pots and one tall umbrella stand.

Chapter6

Dink gulped and felt goose bumps climbing his legs.

 * gulp 1) 음식을 꿀꺽 삼키다. 2) 많은 양의 공기를 재빨리 들이쉬다.

 

He yawned and closed his eye, deciding that he had seen a firefly.

It was pitch dark. Up ahead, he heard a hideous scream.

Dink bolted upright in his bed. The blankets were twisted around his legs and the alarm was buzzing.

Relieved, he shut off the alarm.

He was munching when Ruth Rose and Josh came in.

Josh grabbed a muffin and bit off half.

Walker came in wearing tall rubber boots and a yellow slicker.

Dink peered into the woods, half expecting to see the strange light again.

Dink breathed in the salty night air.

“Ready to come aboard?”

 Chapter7

“Better slip one of those on,”

* slip: (재빨리) 걸치다. 입다.

 

The kids climbed into the bulky vests and sat on benches

Walker hollered over the roar of the engine.

He could smell the lobster bait.

* bait 미끼, 먹이

 

Did the light have anything to do with the strange noises or the two green feathers?

The waves rocked the boat back and forth.

* rock: 앞뒤 또는 양옆으로 흔들다. = move

 

Waves slapped against the hull as they chugged through the black water.

They sat in a patch of sunlight.

“That winch brings them up. I’ll show you how it works.”

Walker picked up a long pole with a hook on one end. He used it to grab the rope attached to a marker buoy.

He snagged the rope onto the winch, pushed a button, and wet rope began whistling up out of the water.

* snag = (informal) get/ catch

Wearing a rubber apron and gloves, Walker dragged it into the boat.

 

A few small crabs scampered out onto the deck.

Josh dragged the heavy pail over.

 

He snapped two thick rubber bands onto the lobster’s front claws.

He fastened the door and shoved the trap back into the water.

Walker winched up another pot and held a wiggling lobster out to Josh.

Dink volunteered while Josh faked gagging noises.

The morning grew warm, so the kids stripped off their sweatshirts.

Sea gulls soared over head, watching for scraps.

When the boats were side by side, Rip tossed a line to Dink.

Rip caught it in his free hand.

Chapter8

Dink snatched up the feather.

* snatch 잡아채다. = take hold of sth quickly and roughly

 

Ready to head in?

He started up the engine, and they chugged toward land.

She must be out doing errands.

She found a watering can next to the mud room door and filled it from the spigot.

Where could they be coming from?

 

We should drag it outside and sweep it.

 

On his knees, Dink began rolling up the rug. 둥글게 말기 시작했다.

 

He strolled over to see.

* stroll = walk in a slow, relaxed manner for pleasure. 한가롭게 거닐다. 느긋하게 걷다.

 

Ruth Rose ran over.

The handle had a spring lock. Ruth Rose squeezed the spring, and the lock popped open.

 

They heard a creepy whoosh, then cold, damp air escaped.

* a creepy whoosh 오싹한 휙 소리

* escape 새어나오다.

 

The kids stared into the musty smelling hole. ~안을 바라보았다.

Chapter9

What the heck was that?

“Josh, you’re strangling me!” Dink croaked.

* strangle 목졸라죽이다.

* croak 침울한 목소리로 말하다. 목이 아프거나 건조하여 거친 목소리로 말하다.

 

The rock walls oozed, and the floor was under water.

* ooze 작은 틈새를 통해 어떤 것이 천천이 흐르다. 새다. 천천히 어떤 끈적이는 액체를 생산하다.

 

Then something behind them made a loud squawk. 꽥 소리를 내다.

She pointed to a dark mound up against one wall.

* mound 흙무더기, 고분

 

“It’s a tarp,”

*tarp: 타르를 칠한 방수천 = tarpaulin

 

The birds panicked, beating their wings against the cage bars.

I’d have done if I’d bumped into him!

* bump into sb 예상치 못하게 어떤 사람을 만나다.

 

What the heck is this place?

The parrots shrieked at the rising water.

* shriek 비명을 지르다.

 

He lugged it into the dry tunnel.

* lug 끌고 가다.

 

They hurried back along the tunnel with the parrots squawking in fear.

* squawk 꽥꽥 울다.

 

He walked up the steps and pushed on the door. It didn’t budge.

It’s no use.

The door must have fallen, and the lock snapped shut. 쾅 하고 닫혔다.

 

If the tide floods this tunnel…

* flood ~에 가득 차다. = cover with water

 

Chapter10

The kids lugged the two cages back through the tunnel.

The parrots screeched and beat their wings.

* screech 불쾌한 소리를 내다.

 

“This water’s cold and yucky,”

* yucky 역겹고 불쾌한

 

The tunnel grew darker as they waded away from the cave.

* waded 걷다.

 

Suddenly they heard a whispery sound in the darkness around them.

* whispery 희미한, 속삭임 같은

 

“Calm down,” Josh said, giggling.

“Boy, does the sun feel good!” Josh said, flopping down on the sand. ~에 털썩 주저 앉다.

 

The kids rested and caught their breath. 숨을 돌렸다.

“Poachers,” Josh said, pulling off his soaked sneakers.

* Poachers 불법적으로 동물을 잡거나 죽이는 사람들

 

Chapter11

“The footprints on the rug were big enough to be his,”

Dink blurted out. (결과를 생각하지 않고) 불쑥 말했다.

 

Wallis exclaimed with wide eyes. 어떤 감정 때문에 말하거나 소리치다.

How incredible! 믿어지지 않아!

 

But now I know how Emory Scott got all that marble and stuff up here!

They trooped into the mud room.

* troop 무리지어 ~로 가다. 주로 줄지어 감.

 

How would the poachers get them all the way to Maine?

“I’m kind of hungry, too,” Josh said. “We missed lunch.”

 

Today is Sunday, but tomorrow morning I’m going to call the state capital.

At one-thirty in the morning, the kids were crouched by the window in Dink and Josh’s dark room.

* were crouched 몸을 수그렸다.

But whoever it is will have to come to feed the parrots, right?

누구든 앵무새들에게 먹이를 주기 위해 와야 할 거야, 그렇지?

 

“Let’s take turns watching. I’ll go first. You guys can snooze.” 잠깐 졸다.

Josh said flopping on his bed.

The alarm clock counted away the minutes.

Moonlight fell on the clearing.

The kids inched forward.

Suddenly Josh bolted around the corner of the playhouse and through the open door.

Dink heard the spring lock snap into place.

 

Chapter12

She’d called 911 and reported poachers on her property.

Trading in endangered animals is a federal crime.

 

The police will be checking his phone bills to see whom he called.

No wonder it always looked so clean.

 

We may find out yet.

She grinned shyly.

 

Just then a loud screech came from the mud room.
