Samantha the snob

주인공 여자 아이의 반으로 약간 격식 있고 화려한 여학생(Samantha)이 전학을 온다. 주인공은 처음에 그 아이의 모양새를 보고 그 아이가 속물이라고 생각한다. 그러나 Samantha의 생일파티에서 Samantha 와 다양한 게임을 하며 그녀와 친해진다. 주인공은 처음에는 Samantha S. Van Dorf에서 S가 snob(속물)의 약자라고 비꼬아 생각한다. 그러나 책 마지막에서 Samantha 의 생일 케익을 통해  S가 Sue의 약자라는 것을 알고 멋진 이름이라고 생각한다. Step into Reading 시리즈가 내용은 단순하지만 어휘를 익히고 따라 읽는 연습을 하기에는  적합하다고 생각했다. 

 

Samantha stuck her nose in the air. 

Samantha는 그녀의 코를 공중에 박았다(?)

 

She wears them to class.

Her hat is a designer original. 

It is one of a kind. 이건 단 하나뿐이다. 유일한 거야

 

I would not want my friend to look like a loony bird, too.

* loony: silly or stupid

 

He is on the loose.

* on the loose 도망 치는 중인,

 

She looks like a fat grizzly bear.

* grizzly 회색의 , 반백의

 

I bet that coat cost an arm and a leg. 매우 비싸다.

I would not give away my arm or my leg to look like a fat bear. 거져 주다.

 

Big whoop-de-doo!

엄청난 소동이군! 어떤 사람이 말한 것이나 한 행동이 중요하다고 생각하지 않을 때 하는 말.

 

You should not judge a book by its cover.

 

I picture Samantha opening my present.

*picture sb -ing: 어떤 사람이 ~하는 것을 상상하다.

 

She has a turned-up nose. 들창코를 가졌다.

 

They each have their bathing suits. 일체형 수영복

It squirts water from a flower. ~을 분출시키다.

Her dress sparkles. 반짝거린다.

 

We come in last. It figures. “Oh, well,” says the snob. I make a face.

우리는 마지막으로 들어온다. 나는 얼굴을 찌푸린다.

 

Next there is the wheelbarrow race.

I make the thumbs-up sign.

It says, HAPPY BIRTHDAY, SAMANTHA SUE!
