역사는 위험을 감수하는 사람들로부터 만들어지는 것 같다. 대부분은 사람들은 위험이나 손실을 회피하려고 한다. 그러나 Columbus는 죽을 위험도 무릅쓰고 Indies를 찾기 위해 모험을 떠났다. 그리고 다른 sailors가 항해 도중에 두려움을 느껴 다시 Spain으로 돌아가자고 주장했을 때도 그는 다른 항해사들에게 삼 일만을 더 부탁했다. 기술이 많이 발달된 지금도 바다에서 죽는 사람이 생기는데 1400년대에 32주 동안 항해를 했다는 사실이 놀라웠다. 비록 Columbus는 Indies가 아닌 America를 발견하긴 했지만 그의 모험 덕분에 지금의 내가 더 다양한 세상을 보고 들을 수 있는 것 같다.

They are afraid of getting lost. The ocean is a great mystery. How big is it? How long will it take to cross it? What is on the other side? Will they ever get back to Spain?
Columbus knows a lot about the sea. He is a navigator and a mapmaker. Now he dreams of becoming an explorer, too.
India, China, Japan- the Indies!
Two huge continents lie in his way. Nobody in Europe knows they are there.

Soon the sailors cannot see land. Now they are really afraid.
What if the wind stops blowing? The ships have no motors.
What if there is a storm? The ships are small and made only of wood.
What if they run out of food? They cannot go back for more.
What if they are in danger? They cannot radio for help.
There are extra sails and spare wood. In fact, so much is stored below, the sailors must sleep on deck.

Weeks and weeks go by. Now everyone is tired and scared.
Tired of eating salt meat.
Tired of seeing nothing but ocean.
Tired of being stuck on a tiny ship.
One night a ball of fire blazes across the sky. 불꽃을 내며 타다. 불꽃처럼 번쩍이다.
But Columbus knows it is just a meteor.

A blanket of seaweed covers the ocean. Will the ship get stuck?

The sailors are afraid, but not Columbus. “Sail on!” he cries. And on they go.
They have been at sea for almost two whole months. Where is the land Columbus promised? Columbus points to the birds flying overhead. He points to the leafy branches floating in the water.
Who cares about finding a new route to the Indies? They just want to stay alive.
Three boats go ashore.

The sailors are so happy to be on land, they kiss the sand.
The Indians have never seen men with swords. Why have they come? What will they do?

Early one morning a strong wind drives the Santa moria aground. The ship is wrecked! Columbus moves to the Nina

If a boat or ship is aground, it is unable to move because it is touching ground or in a place where there is very little water:
Day after day fierce winds batter the ships. Huge waves wash over the decks.

On March 15, 1493, Columbus finally reaches Spain. The voyage has lasted thirty-two weeks! Columbus rides on a mule to visit the king and queen. Everywhere along the way people gather to cheer him and to see what he has brought back.
For the rest of his life, Columbus never knows how truly great his discovery is. He has really found a new world – a world that no one in Europe knew about. It is called America.
