Abe Lincoln's Hat

 

  제목만 봤을 때는 링컨 전 대통령이라고 생각지 못했다. 책을 다 읽고 나서야 그 사실을 알았다. 이 책을 통해서 1) 사람이 가난해도 말끔하게 하고 다녀야 한다는 사실, 2) 자신의 문제를 창의적으로 해결하려는 노력의 필요성, 3) 밝은 태도의 중요성을 느꼈다. 또한 약자(이 책에서는 흑인 노예)를 생각하는 이타적인 마음이 그 사람을 부유하게 만들어주지는 않더라도 존경받는 인물로 만들어준다고도 생각했다. 

  어떤 사람의 중요한 위치에 오른 뒤에 그 사람을 평가하는 건 참 약은 것 같다. 그 사람이 그 위치에 오기까지 겪은 실제 과정은 알기 어렵기 때문이다. 그렇기에 위인전만으로 내가 어떤 사람이 되어야 겠다고 결정하기는 힘들지만 적어도 나에게 생각할거리는 던져준 책이었다.

At another trial two men argued over who owned a young horse. Each said he owned the mother of the colt. 망아지

 

She sewed up the holes in his pants. Now she begged Abe for help.

 

“It was bright as day.”

 

This man treated Nance badly. So she would not work for him. 강한 거부

 

Abe argued for Nance in court. Illinois was a free state, he said. All its people are free, whatever their color. ~에 대해 찬성의견을 주장하다

 

Abe tried to get elected to the U.S Senate.
