 세 명의 아이들은 New York City에서 Dink의 삼촌을 만난다. 삼촌은 아이들에게 priceless jewel을 보여주지만 Dr.Pitt에 의해 그 보석이 가짜라는 사실을 알게된다. 그러나 실은 Dr.Pitt이 진짜 보석을 어항에 숨겨놓은 채 가째 보석으로 뒤바꿔 놓았기에 일어난 일이었다. 


Chapter1.

Dink flashed an evil grin.

*flash a grin  웃다

 

The train slowed속도 또는 활동을 늦추다.

 

The dust and soot coming up from under the train made Dink sneeze.

* soot /sʊt/ a black powder composed mainly of carbon

 

He carried an umbrella and wore a red carnation in his lapel. /

“Whom have we here?”

 

Uncle Warren marched up a long ramp with the kids right behind him.

* march = walk somewhere quickly and in a determined way.

Hundreds of people bustled in every direction. 분주히 돌아다니다.

 

Try as he might, Dink couldn’t take it all in.

아무리 노력해도, Dink 모든 것을 흡수할 수가 없었다.

 

Taurus and Capricorn- the zodiac signs, dear boy.”

Taurus: /ˈtɔːr.əs/ 황소자리. Capricorn: 염소자리 /!프리콘/

* zodiac signs: 천문학에서 year 부분을 나타내는 12가지의 상징들

 

“Now onward!” 앞으로 나아가라.

 

His ears were blasted by horns honking, brakes squealing, music blaring, and food vendors shouting.

그의 귀들이 울렸다.

A yellow cab zoomed up and screeched to a halt inches from Uncle Warren’s shiny black shoes.

They had barely sat down and shut the door when the cab lurched back into traffic.

Dink watched thousands of cars, taxis, buses, bikes, and people dodge one another. Even through the closed taxi window, he could feel the throbbing pulse of the huge city.

Twenty minutes later, the cab hurtled to a stop in front of a building made of white marble.

He pointed to a small brass sign next to a green door.

 Chapter2.

They climbed carpeted stairs to a door with a frosted-glass window.

* Frosted glass is less smooth to stop it being transparent 안이 보이지 않게 처리한 유리

 

Uncle Warren unlocked it, and they walked into a spacious dimly lit office.

* spacious 공간이 넓은

 

A wooden crate nearly as tall as Dink sat on the floor.

“He took the afternoon off.”

 

Uncle Warren flipped up three switches on the wall.

 

Suddenly, a ceiling fan began whirring around.

* whirring around 윙윙 소리 내며 움직이다.

 

He draped his suit jacket over a chair, then dragged a tool box from a closet. He selected a small crowbar from among the tools. Fitting the sharp end of the bar under the crate’s lid, he pried the top off.

* drape: 옷이나 천을 어떤 위에 느슨하게 올려 놓다. put something such as cloth or a piece of clothing loosely over something:

* crowbar: a heavy iron bar with a bent end that is used to help lift heavy objects off the ground or to force things open:

He stripped away the paper to reveal a layer of plastic bubble wrap.

Leaning over the side of the crate, Uncle Warren dug deeper into the peanuts.

 

Grunting, he lifted out a much bigger package. 끙끙거리며

 

The Incas admired jaguars for their strength and cunning. This one is made of solid gold.

Let’s rewrap the cup and put it back, then nail the crate shut again till tomorrow.

He opens the door for tenants and whistles for taxis.

Uncle Warren flipped down the wall switches. 스위치를 끄다.

 

Chapter3.

Dink’s uncle lived in a squat gray building a few blocks from the museum.

 * squat: 땅딸막한  short and wide, usually in a way that is not attractive:

 

“I’m game,”

 

A smiling host welcomed them to the restaurant.

 * host : 여관 등의 주인

 

My stomach is ready to bust!

 

By the way, what were those black slimy things on my chicken?

The oldest gets to read his first,”

 

Dink cracked open his cookie and read his fortune to himself.

 

Out loud, Dink!”

 

“Your eyes will play tricks on you.”

 

Off to slumberland! (잠자리에 들거라?)

 * slumberland: 잠의 나라

 

It was still raining, so they huddled under two umbrellas.

 * huddle 옹기종기 모이다.

 

I’ve promised them a buggy ride through Central Park when the rain stops!

 

Once more, Uncle Warren pried off the crate’s lid. 들춰내다.

 

Using a special magnifying glass, he examined each item, then checked it off a list. 특별한 돋보기

 

.., some pottery, and colorful masks made of jade and feathers.

 * jade 

 

“Donny, can you give me a hand?”

 

“What workmanship!” 장인의 솜씨

 

Then he stroked the golden cat, feeling each curve and muscle.

Chapter4

“I don’t see how it could be fake.”

 

“Will you please pull the shades and turn off the lights?”

* pull the shades 차양을 내리다. 블라인트를 치다.

 

He knelt down and fumbled around under the desk.

* fumbled around 더듬거리며 찾다.

Dink blinked at the sudden brightness. 눈을 깜박이다.

 

“Then the swap must have taken place before the crate arrived,” 교환

 

I don’t see how it was possible!”

 

“If you want that second opinion...” 다른 의견

 

Tell her it’s urgent! 다급한, 긴급한

 

Uncle Warren slumped in his chair and stared at the statue. 쓰러지다. 털썩 주저앉다.

 

“This is a glass replica.” 유리 모조품

 

Uncle Warren fell back into his chair. “I am simply dumbfounded!~뒤로 물러나다.

* dumbfounded: 어안이 벙벙한 (너무 놀라서 말이 안나오는)

 

Who besides you has a key to this office?

 

“So two people besides yourself had access to the jaguar, is that right?”

 

“That is correct, but I assure you, neither of them has touched that statue. The idea is absurd!”

* absurd: 말도 안되는, 터무니없는

 

But unless I miss my guess, no others.

 

Excuse me, sir, but there is another suspect. 용의자

 

 

Chapter5

Dink heard thumping footsteps on the stairs just before two police officers entered the office.

 * thumping: 매우 very big or important

 

*in one of the police cruisers.

 * cruisers: 순찰차들 /ˈkruː.zɚ/

 

The men will be back in a jiffy, yes?

 * in a jiffy

 

Josh slurped up the last of his drink.

 * slurp 시끄럽게 소리내어 마시다.

 

Dink turned around and saw Yvonne slip through a narrow door.

 * slip through~ 지나가다.

 

There was no frame, no knob, and no hinges.

 *hinges: 여닫이문을 문틀에 달아서 고정 시킬 있도록 만든 철물 따위.  a piece of metal that fastens the edge of a door

 

“Disappearing doors?” Josh scoffed.

 * scoffed 비웃었다.

 

“When my uncle hugged me upstairs, he whispered, ‘Remember your cookie’ in my ear.”

 

Dink pulled out his uncle’s brass key ring.

 

The kids watched her slip inside the green door that led up to Uncle Warren’s office.

 

“Why is she going back up there?”

 

She was carrying a pitcher and a plate of cookies.

 

Dink watched her dash up the street, raising her umbrella.

 


Chapter6.

They scooted next door and slipped through the green door.

 

He flipped up the wall switches, and the lights, ceiling fan, and music all came on.

 

Dink squinted in the sudden brightness.

 

“Why do I have to go poking through the trash?”

 *poke 찌르다. 쑤시다

 

It was completely bare.

* bare 나체의, 가구나 장식 등이 없는

 

he tried to force his fingers into the cracks, but the door wouldn’t budge.

“But why? We gotta keep looking. Did you find anything in the trash, Josh?”

Nothing but a secret door that doesn’t open,”

 

“But my uncle is counting on us to find something up here, and I’m not gonna stop till I find it!”

 


Chapter7

“But we’ve already looked at everything,” Josh said, flopping down on the rug. ~ 떨썩 주저앉으며

 

There are already some flakes floating on the water. 조각들


Josh jumped to his feet, and he and Dink hurried over.

 

“Thinks always look bigger under water,” Ruth Rose said. “Your eyes are playing tricks on you again, Dink!”

 

Ruth Rose reached down and plucked the green rock out of the tankWater dripped onto the floor as she wiped it on her jeans.  잡아당겼다.

 

In the tank light, the rock shone a lustrous green.

* lustrous 광채를 내는 / luster 광채

 

 I guess the thief dumped it in,

Ruth rose clicked off the bubbler.

It’s a hidden compartment!

It was rewinding,

Dink quickly rewound the tape to the beginning, then turned on the TV and hit “play” on the VCR.

“Hit ‘fast forward’,”

The picture on the screen flickered. 깜박이다.

 

And the doc tells us it’s a fake,

Chapter8

He fast-forwarded until the tape showed the room and everyone in it.

 

“See, the letter opener is point away from the windows. It got turned around!”

Just then, they heard thumps outside the office door, like someone stomping on a carpet.

* stomp 발을 구르다.

 

He swept a hand over the wall switches.

 

The kids dashed into the small office. Dink left the door open a crack so he could see who entered.

Chapter9

Turning slowly, Dr. Pitts played the beam around the room.

 

In James’s office, Dink shrank back against the wall. 뒷걸음쳤다

 

Dr. Pits was crouched down, staring into the tank.

 

Suddenly, he swore. 욕했다

 

Dink felt himself being dragged backward.

 

“Don’t speak!” a hoarse voice whispered in his ear.

 

As he stumbled down, he smelled something familiar.

 

“He is gone!” Yvonne wailed.

 

Chapter10

“I propose a toast,” he said. 축배를 제안하다

 

“You put a crook behind bars and saved a priceless jewel from being stolen.”

 

“I knew if I gave you my key and reminded you not to trust what you saw, you’d figure it out.”

 

Besides, I’m a dunce when it comes to anything electronic.

* dunce 저능아, 바보, 얼간이

 

He knew he was going to slip the emerald into the water.

* slip 미끄러지다. 빠지다. 떨어지다.

 

The horse was harnessed to a buggy. 마구를 달았다.

* buggy: 필의 말이 끄는 경마차

 

He wore a spiffy gray suit and a black top hat. 멋부린

 

“Cool!” Josh said, hoisting himself into the buggy. 들어올리다. 끌어올리다.

 

“We are going to see New Your City by night,” 밤중에,
