The orange outlaw

Thanks for inviting us to your block party.

* block party: 지역 사람들의 주도로 공공장소와 거리에서 이루어지는 party

 

Tonight, we plan to raise money for the Central Park Zoo.

* raise money 돈을 모금하다

 

My friend Forest Evans just bought it vacationing in France.

* vacation: 휴가를 보내다

 

Then they crossed the hall and crowded into the small elevator.

* crowd: 사람들이 어떤 장소를 채우다. 어떤 사람에게 너무 다가가서 그 사람이 불편함을 느끼게 하다. (don’t crowd me!)

*crowd into a place: 그것을 가득 채우다.

 

He looked like royalty in his crisp uniform and pointy mustache.

 

She was stooped and had a lined face and wild orange hair.

* stoop: 허리가 굽어 있다. 허리 등을 구부리다

 

You haven’t met my nephew Donny and his friends, have you? Kids, Miss Booker is the building manager.

His hinged mouth opened and closed as he spoke, and his bright eyes moved from side to side.

 

I’ll report you for dummy abuse!

* abuse: 잘못된 목적으로 사용하다, 어떤 사람을 잔인하게 대하다

 

The man pulled a cookie from an open bag at his feet.

* open bag 열려 있는 가방?

 

I think I noticed a vendor selling slices.

* vendor 어떤 것을 파는 사람, 행상인

Dink looked past his uncle into the study.

 

The tabletop was littered with orange juice and peels.

* litter 쓰레기 = rubbish

* be littered with sth: sth을 많이 가지고 있는

* The newspaper has a reputation for being littered with spelling mistakes.

 

The fruit bowl was overturned.

* overturn = go upside down, turn over 뒤집히다

 

More peels and dribbles of juice covered the floor.

* dribble: a very slow flow of a liquid

 

Forest will be devastated.

* devastated = completely destroyed

 

Thank goodness he had the painting insured!

* insure: 보험에 들다, 어떤 것에 대해 보험을 제공하다.

 

He had black eyes, dark, swept-back hair, and a nose that looked as if it had been broken.

 

Dink could see that the block party was winding down.

* wind down = 1) gradually relax after doing sth that has made you tried or worried 2) gradually end

 

I offered to go up and check, but she said not to bother.

Roger directed them to a metal door around the corner from the elevator.

* direct sb to somewhere: ~ ~로 안내하다.

 

Dink slid back a long bolt and shoved the door open.

* slide – slid: move easily and w/o interruption over a surface

 

It was completely enclosed except for an alley that led to the street.

* enclosed = surrounded by walls, objects, or structures

 

Next to the building, a Dumpster sat in the shadows.

 

I don’t see how the crook could have gotten up or down this way.

* crook 사기꾼, 범죄자

 

There was a robbery in my uncle’s apartment.

* robbery 어딘가 혹은 누군에게 훔치는 범죄(crime),

 

When I was your age, my father and mother owned a carnival. My brothers did the high-wire act. they were known as the Flying Bookers. I was the girl on the trapeze.

* carnival: 축제

* high-wire act 줄타기, 아슬아슬한 행동

* trapeze 공중그네

 

The alley was blocked off. 차단되었다.

 

There was a trailer parked here during the block party.

* trailer = vehicle, a box on wheels that is pulled by a car

Now off to bed, kiddos.

 

“Thank you, my dear. Sweet dreams, everyone,” Uncle Warren said as he padded toward his bedroom.

*pad: 1) 안에 있는 것을 보호하기 위해 부드러운 물질을 덧대다. Protect

2) walk w/o making a noise

 

I don’t know about you guys. But I couldn’t sleep a wink right now.

*a wink: 아주 짧은 시간

 

The butler – I mean, the doorman – did it!

* butler 집사, 하인(servants)를 관리하는 역할을 맡은 한 집에서 가장 중요한 남자.

 

Heck, maybe they did it together.

제기랄,

 

High in the sky, he made out the blinking lights on an airplane.

 

Maybe she did it to keep anyone from suspecting her.

* suspect 어떤 사람이 범죄를 저질렀다고 혹은 어떤 걸 잘못했다고 생각하다. 의심하다.

 

Okay, but how would she get into my uncle’s apartment? Or are you going to tell me she swung up on a vine, like Tarzan?

Josh shot out of the bed, tripping over his sneakers as he charged into the kitchen.

*trip = lose balance ~에 걸려 넘어지다

Blueberry pancakes are my uncle’s specialty.

“Good morning!” Mrs. Cornelius chirped.

Using a cane, she led them into a cheerful living room.

Goodness! I always miss the excitement. When did it happen, dear?

That prowler I saw on my balcony must have been the thief!

* prowler 범죄가 일어나기 전에 들키지 않으려고 어떤 장소에서 조용히 움직이는 사람, 좀도둑

 

Pull those drapes, dear.

* drapes = curtains of thick cloth

 

It was just like Uncle Warren’s, except that several bird feeders were attached to the balcony railing.

* feeders: 동물들에게 먹이를 주기 위한 용기

 

She pointed to a round magnifying glass about the size of a pie plate.

 

She took a pad out of the pocket of her robe and handed it to Dink.

*pad = notepad 떼어 쓸 수 있도록 된 종이

Bad posture, baggy clothes, orange hair – sounds more like Josh!”

* posture 자세, 마음가짐

I’ll be back in a jiffy.

 

He moved the pancake platter to one side and set the box in its place.

 

“Sure.” Josh grimaced as he yanked out a hair.

* grimace: 얼굴을 찡그리다

 

They left the apartment, but Dink walked past the elevator.

I don’t know, but we can’t take any chances.

* chance = risk 부정적인 것이 일어날 가능성

* I’m delivering my work by hand – I’m not taking any chances.

 

Out of breath, the kids finally reached the lobby.

But if Miss Booker did it, why would she tell us she can climb building? Wouldn’t that just point the finger at her?

But all the time, she probably just went through the front door with her key.

He carefully slipped the snapshot inside his shirt.

* slip = slide

 

Weekend traffic whizzed by. 매우 빠르게 지나가다

 

A man in gray work clothes was sweeping up litter.

*sweep = 바닥을 청소하다

 

“Hey, watch your step there, young fella,” said the man with the broom.

* broom 빗자루

 

Using his foot, he scraped the stuff back together.

* scrape 원하지 않는 층을 벗겨내다, 문지르다

 

Caught in the peel was a long orange hair.

 

Dink tapped the snapshot inside his shirt.

*tap: 1) 가볍게 치다 2) 어떤 것을 사용하거나 취하다 = get

Uncle Warren was in the kitchen looking glum when Dink, Josh, and Ruth Rose rushed in.

* glum 침울한, disappointed or unhappy, and quiet.

 

Dink unbuttoned his shirt and carefully placed the snapshot on the table.

Still, I doubt that’s enough for Detective Costello to make an arrest.

I think that would be enough to convince Detective Costello.

She was wearing Uncle Warren’s beret and a pair of his glasses.

Dr. Parker is the curator for primates at the Bronx Zoo.

* curator: 박물관이나 도서관 등을 담당하고 있는 사람

 

Our backup car will let us know when the Flowler drive in.

 

Everyone else will stay in the garage until I give the word to come out.

 

Josh had his ear to the garage door. He started to giggle when he heard Ruth Rose beg “Daddy” for a pony of her own.

 

“She gets to have all the fun,” he whispered.

Dink felt himself blushing as everyone outside the garage turned to look at everyone inside.

* blush 당황해서 얼굴이 붉어지다

 

The trailer stood a few yards away. Through a thick mesh screen, Dink saw Ollie and Polly.

 

He pulled his wallet out and flipped open his badge.

 

Dink watched him take out a pair of scissors and snip a few hairs from Ollie’s arm.

Dink saw his Adam’s apple go up and down.

* Adam’s apple 목에서 튀어나온 부분

 

“So? Big deal. What’s wrong with having a picture? I’ve got lots of pictures.”

Harvey Fowler smirked, showing a gold tooth. “I got one word for you: proof. You got any?”

 

The ones I just snipped from Olli are the same as the one found in Mr. Duncan’s kitchen. They’re both like the hair the kids found in front of the apartment building.

You’re both under arrest for grand theft. 큰 절도

 

Last week, he insured a Monet painting.

 

Detective Costello and Frost handcuffed the Fowlers.

Josh gulped.

 

Ollie shuffled over and smelled Josh’s hair.
