This book was useful to me even though this is for children. This is because I didn’t know lever is also a machine; I didn’t know scissors, a wheelbarrow, a nutcracker and a tin opener are also a lever.

The place where the brick rests on the plank is the fulcrum.

A light weight can lift a heavy weight if the heavy weight is nearest to the fulcrum.

Levers come in all sorts of useful shapes and sizes.

A heavy load

The fulcrum is where the two arms join at one end. When you push the two arms together, this small force turns into a greater force nearer to the fulcrum.

You squeeze the tongs, or apply a force in the middle. This allows the tongs to hold on an object in place.
