How his mean parents expected him to get by on 50p a week pocket money he would never know.

* get by on/with ~ 그럭저럭 살아가다

Ex) How can he get by on so little money?

Why should they have all the money when there were so many things he needed?

Horrid Henry looked round his room, scowling.

I need more pocket money. Ralph gets a pound a week.

Different children get different amounts. I think 50p a week is perfectly adequate.

I always save loads from my 30p.

A load / loads = a lot

He was a giant crab crushing a prawn in its claws.

Horrid Henry ran to his bedroom and piled his unwanted jumble into a box. He cleared his shelves of books, his wardrobe of party clothes, and his toy-box of puzzled with pieces missing.

Jumble 잡동사니, old things

*clear 장소 of 물건:

It was packed with rich pickings.

Henry sauntered over to Mum’s dressing table.

He chose a large crystal one with a swan-shaped stopper and packed it in the box.

* stopper 마개

Then he staggered out to the pavement to set up the display.

* stagger = walk or move with difficulty

Horrid Henry surveyed his stall. It was piled high with great bargains. He should make a fortune.

* survey 둘러보다, look at or examine all of sth, esp carefully

* bargain = sth on sale at lower price than its true value

If only he could get rid of his horrible brother, wouldn’t life be perfect?

What was it the Romans did with their leftover captives?

I’m having a jumble sale. Lots of bargains. All the money raised will go to a very good cause.

Moody Margaret picked up a punctured football.

50p is my final offer.

How come I get 10p when I cost 50p?

Shopkeeper’s expenses.

Business was brisk.

*brisk = quick, energetic, and active

*beefy 살집이 좋은

Then Aerobic Al jogged by.

That was more money than Horrid Henry had ever had in his life!

* sitting room 거실

No ifs or buts, Henry!

I can’t afford to buy him. If you want him back you should pay for him.

“All right,” grumbled Henry, getting to his feet.

* get to one's feet 일어서다

Margaret was lying by the padding pool.

Slave! A cool drink, and make it snappy!

* make it snappy 재빨리하다

I haven’t spent all this time and effort training him just to get my money back. He’s worth at least 10 pounds now.

Spend, spend, spend would be his motto from now on.
