The Parents swap shop

JWL 2019. 1. 1. 13:01

Have you done your spelling?

They fussed.

*fuss 야단치다, = nag, give too much attention to small matters that are not important, usually in a way that show that you are worried and not relaxed.

How many times do I have to tell you?

Chew with your mouth shut!

Dad moaned at her about her untidy room and Mum told her off for breaking her CD player, even though it was an accident.

Tell off s1: 어떤 사람을 격렬하게 비난하다.

moaned about:~ 대해 불평하다.

*moan = complain 다른 사람에게는 별로 중요하게 여겨지지 않는 것에 대해 짜증스러운 목소리로 불평하다

*off = not liking sth

예시) she’s been off drugs for a year now.

I used to love coffee but I’ve gone off it(= UK, stopped liking it).

Who cared about spelling, anyway? She thought, scuffing her new shoes along the pavement.

* scuff 발을 끌다.

Why shouldn’t she spell words the way she wanted to?

This was extraordinary. 천재적이다!

This was fabulous. 죽인다! = excellent!

She could trade in the two grumps she lived with and get some nice parents instead.

*grump: 불평가

Then Dad moaned about her terrible handwriting. Mum moaned about her terrible reading.

Before they could say another word, Ava’s parents were wrapped, packed, and dispatched.

*dispatch = send sth 특정한 목적 때문에 물건이나 전달할 사항을 어디론가 보내다

No bossy boots. No naggers.

*boots 보기 싫은 녀석

“not much,” sniffed the fat mum.

*sniff = speak in an unpleasant way, showing that you have a low opinion of something

Parents exist to serve children. You name it, we do it.

* you name it. 무엇이든 말만 .

This was more like it.

쪽이 낫군!

Tough luck. I’m the boss and I’ll do what I like.

* tough luck 그건 됐구나 ( said to show that you have no sympathy for s1’s problems or difficulties)

How could any child have traded in these jewels?

In fact, they didn’t bother with her much at all, other than to smile and agree to whatever she asked.

* other than = except

So spoiled, so ungrateful, so demanding. When I think about our dear Ava…

* ungrateful 감사의 뜻을 나타내지 않는,

I think we may have been a little hard on her.

*be hard on s1 ~ 거칠게 다루다. 심하게 대하다.
