Horrid Henry reads a book

수업시간에 선생님의 말씀은 한 귀로 흘리면서 낙서를 하던 Henry의 귀에 들린 한 단어는 'prize'였다. 그 때부터 선생님의 말씀을 들어보니 school reading competition이 있어서 2주 동안 가능한한 많은 책을 읽고 읽은 책에 대해 report를 쓰면 되는 거였다. Henry는 책 읽는 게 참 지루하다고 생각했는데 대회의 상품이 a family ticket to a brand new theme park라는 사실에 의욕을 보인다.

그러나 책 읽기를 하루 하루 미루며 놀던 Henry는 reading competition이 하루 밖에 남지 않았음을 동생 Peter를 통해 알게 된다. Henry는 급한 마음에 동생이 읽는 5권의 책의 list와 report 내용을 베낀다. 하지만 이내 5권이 충분하지 않다는 사실을 깨닫는다. Clever Clare는 17권을 읽을 것이다. 낙담하던 Henry는 세상에 없는 책의 제목을 쓰고 report를 쓰는 기발한 방법을 생각해 낸다. 

그렇게 목록에 27권을 쓴 Henry는 수상자 발표 날에 자신의 이름이 호명되기를 기다리지만 수상자는 28권을 읽은 Clever Clare였다. 그런데 발표 도중에 선생님은 Clever Clare가 동일한 책을 실수로 두 번 썼다는 것을 발견한다. 그러자 Henry는 연단 앞으로 가서 ticket은 자신의 것이라고 주장한다. 결국 선생님은 Clever Clare와 Henry에게 모두  a family ticket을 준다. 하지만 그것은 a family pass to the new theme park, BOOK WORLD였다. 

 

Miss Battle-Axe droned on and on and on.

* drone: 낮고 계속되는 소음을 만들다. 목소리가 변하지 않고 지루하게 계속되다.

 

Horrid Henry drew pictures of crocodiles tucking into a juicy Battle-Axe snack in his maths book.

Horrid Henry stopped doodling.

Well, Henry, if you’d been paying attention instead of scribbling, you’d know, wouldn’t you?

Typical teacher. You’re interested enough in what they’re saying to ask a question, and suddenly they don’t want to answer.

 

Horrid Henry slumped in his chair.

 

Reading was hard, heavy work. Just turning pages made Henry feel exhausted.

 

Well, no way was he taking part in a reading contest.

 

Henry would just have to watch s1 undeserving like Clever Clare or Brainy Brain swagger off with the prize while he sat prize-less at the back.

They dragged him to museums. They hauled him on hikes.

Horrid Henry’s heart leapt.

He’d start reading the second he got home.

 

“As if I’d ever be jealous of you, worm,” sneered Henry.

Wait, I’m not telling you. You just want to find out so (that) you can use it in the competition.

 

Horrid Henry felt as if a dagger had been plunged into his heart.

 

This couldn’t be. Tomorrow! How had tomorrow sneaked up so fast?

 

You should have started reading sooner. After all, why put off till tomorrow what you can do today?

 

 

Horrid Henry prowled up and down his bedroom.

There was peter’s competition entry, in the center of Peter’s immaculate desk.

When he had filled up four pages with books and reports, and his hand ached from writing, he stopped and counted.

 

Miss Battle-Axe rose from her seat and walked to the podium.
