이것도 반납기한이 다되어서 급하게 훑어보기만 했다....함께 해야 행복하다는 교훈을 주는 책이다. 추후에 다시 읽기로 다짐한다...당연한 이야기이지만 중국을 배경으로 한 이야기는 중국의 고유의 정서가 묻어나는 것 같아서 항상 새로운 시각을 배우는 것 같다.
기록해 두고 싶은 표현
“What makes one happy, Siew?” asked Hok, the youngest monk.
…. “These people do not know happiness,” they all agreed. “But today” said Siew, his face bright as the moon, “we will show them how to make stone soup.”
..... Something magical began to happen among the villagers. As each person opened their heart to give, the next person gave even more. And as this happened, the soup grew richer and smelled more delicious.
표현
Three monks, Hok, Lok, and Siew, traveled along a mountain road.
*monk: (종교적 이유로 결혼하지 않고 수도원에 함께 모여 사는) 사람, 수도승
They could not see from so high above that the village had been through many hard times. Famine, floods, and war had made the villagers weary and untrusting of strangers. They had even become suspicious of their neighbors.
* had been through ~을 경험했다.
* Famine: 굶주림, 많은 사람들을 위한 충분한 음식이 없는 상태 (그래서 죽음이나 질병을 경험)
* weary: very tired 어떤 힘든 일을 오랫동안 경험한 뒤에 매우 지친
A seamstress. 옷을 만들거나 바느질하는 직업을 가진 여성, 여자 재봉사
But they had little to do with one another. 그러나 그들은 서로 관련이 없었다.
When the monks reached the foot of the mountain, the villagers disappeared into their houses.
The little girl helped the monks look around the courtyard until they found just the right ones.
* courtyard: (부분/완전히 건물들의 벽으로 둘러싸인) 야외의 평평한 공간, 마당,
“Stones are easy to come by. I’d like to learn how to do that!”
*come by: 얻다 = (노력을 해서) get sth
The monks poked the coals. As smoke drifted up, the neighbors peered out from their windows. The fire and the large pot in the middle of the village was a true curiosity!
*poke: 찌르다, 쑤시다.
* peered out from ~에서 내다보았다.
* curiosity: 배우거나 알고 싶은 것, 굉장한 관심거리
“The last time we had soup stones of this size and color, carrots made the broth very sweet.”
* broth: 묽은 스프= (종종 야채가 들어간) a thin soup, 국
The villagers all nodded their heads, as the smell was very agreeable.
* agreeable 마음에 드는, 기분 좋은 = pleasant / pleasing
* dumpling 만두, 딤섬 / bean curd: 두부 / yam 고구마
