나는 Smart about series를 꽤나 좋아한다. 가장 먼저는 유익한 내용을 담고 있고, 두번째로는 독자들에게 논리적 글쓰기를 간접적으로 알려주기 때문이다. 예를 들면, <Money a rich history>에서는 Bill이라는 가상의 아이가 자신의 관심분야 중의 하나로 Money를 선택한다. 그리고 그가 Money를 주제로 선택한 이유, Money의 정의, 옛날 사람들은 어떤 물건들을 money로 사용 했는지, 그 물건들이 어떻게 바뀌었는지, 왜 바뀌었는지, coin & bill은 어떤 이유로 등장했는지, 낡은 지폐를 어떻게 처리하고, 어떤 사람들이 지폐에 그려져 있는지, 현재와 미래의 money는 어떤 형태인지를 설명해 준다. 이런 책을 읽으면 딱딱한 내용을 이렇게 간결하고 재미있게 풀어 쓰는 작가의 능력에 감탄하고, 나는 왜 이런 책들을 어렸을 때 읽지 않았을까 반성하게 된다.

What is money, anyway? Money is what people use to buy the things they want.

 

What did people do before there was money? Before people had money they used to do something called bartering. Bartering means trading one thing for another. … The problem with bartering is that each person has to own something that the other person wants.

That’s why people invented money!

 

People who lived in the same area got together and picked something that they all agreed was valuable.

It was also good for keeping meat from spoiling as well as making food taste better.

 

In different parts of the world, at different times in history, people used all sorts of things as money. There were problems with this kind of money, though.

But all over the world there was one thing people agreed was VERY valuable – Gold.

 

It didn’t rust like iron, turn green like copper and bronze, or tarnish like silver.

The coins were made from a mixture of gold and silver.

The process of making coins is called minting, and the place where coins are made is called a mint.

When the coins are brand-new and in perfect shape they’re said to be in mint condition.

 

After a while, people began to use the slips of paper as money. That’s how paper money started!

As long as there has been money, there have been people who have tried to make fake money.

It’s called counterfeiting.
