The witch who was afraid of witches

 

[An I can read] 시리즈는 가끔 지루한 내용들이 있다. 그러나 이 책은 제목에서 느낄 수 있는 느낌처럼 유쾌했다. 마녀를 무서워하는 마녀인 Wendy가 어떻게 마녀를 두려워하지 않게 되었는지가 책의 핵심 내용이다. 그리고 마녀를 두려워하지 않겠 된 Wendy가 자신이 두려워했던, 그리고 자신을 따돌렸던 두 언니들에게 어떻게 행동했는지도 주목해 볼 만한다. 미국에서 쓰인 책들은 한국에 비해서 확실히 개성과 독특성을 인정하는 책의 내용이 많다는 생각이 드는 책이었다.

- 왜 Wendy는 sassafras로 만든 빗자루가 아닌 old kitchen broomstick을 사용해서 날 수 있었을까?

One day, Polly was going to the sassafras grove.

*grove: 심어진 나무들이 모여 있는 곳, 농장

 

She flew the fastest of any witch in the valley and cackled the loudest.

 

“Spying again? Off with you. It’s past your bedtime.” 꺼져.

*off with sth: ~을 치우다. 제거하다.

 

Sometimes she tried to make up a spell to put on her sisters, but she needed them to tell her right words.

 

Serve you right! 꼴 좋다!

 

There’s nobody home.

 

is that what you are for Halloween?

Why don’t you come trick-or-treating with me?

 

“You’ll catch on,” said Roger. “You just go woo, woo, woo.”

“Get on. Let’s see you ride.”

“I’m not any good at riding broomsticks,” Wendy said, afraid to try. “I have no witch power.”

After all, Roger didn’t expect her to do anything but pretend and have fun.

 

She took off so fast she hit the ceiling.

Take off: 이륙하다. 시작하다.

 

That made a really good spell pop into Wendy’s head.

Oh that’s easy. I don’t even have to think about that one –

 

First they swooped over threes and made the leaves fall off.

* swoop 공기를 가로지르며 쉽고 재빠르게 움직이다.

 

Then they swooped into the party where Billy and his other best friend were ducking for apples. Billy and his friend were so scared they ran home crying.

 

Suddenly the clock struck midnight.

 

“I’d better fly you home,”

“I want to come home with you and keep on being a witch,”

It’s far too late for them to be out. They may be older, but they have no sense. I will have to teach them a thing or two.

She took her time making up two spells.

 

An hour later, her sisters came limping home.

* limp 다리를 절다.

 

“It couldn’t possibly,” said Polly.

 

She had flown faster than her sisters ever had.

 

In bed, Wendy make up two spells to take the spells off her sisters.

 

Wendy never told them about her spell. It was enough to know that her oldest sister thought she knew everything, but didn’t. and that her middle sister thought she knew how to do everything best, but didn’t.

They knew she was different. And they treated her differently, just like one of them.
