Smart Alec

1. The Smartest Kid

Smart Alec는 세상에서 가장 똑똑한 아이였다. 그녀는 모든것을 알고 있다. 그러나 남동생들이 자신의 옷자락 실을 의자 다리에 묶어 놓은것을 알지 못한다. 

Smart Alec stomped into the room and said to them, "I bet you don't know what the moon made of."

stomp: 의도적으로 무거운 걸음걸이로 걷다. 

It's sparkling clean from all the licking.

There was something she didn't know. Her little brother had tied a thread from her dress to the chair leg.

2. The Loose Thread

동생들 앞에서 잘난체 한 후, Alec는 큰 언니에게로 간다. 언니 앞에서도 잘난체 하지만 정작 자신의 치마에서 나온 실이 가구에 얽히고 있다는 사실은 알지 못한다. 

Smart Alec strutted in and said, "I bet you don't know what happens if you eat too much toast. Well, I know."

strut: 뽐내며 걷다. walk in a proud way trying to look important

She didn't know that the thread from her dress was getting longer and longer. I tangled itself around pieces of furniture.

3. Off to School

Alec는 이제 학교로가 친구 앞에서 잘난체를 한다. 그러나 그녀는 여전히 자신의 치마에서 흘러나온 실이 학교 문을 통과하며 그 길을 휘감고 있다는 사실은 알지 못한다. 

As soon as everyone's gone to bed, all the flowers climb out of the ground.

Then the flowers go back into the ground before anyone wakes up. That's why they've got dew on them. They're so sweaty from all that running around. So there!

누군가의 바람과는 반대되게 무언가가 끝났다는 것을 강조.

She didn't know that the thread from her dress had wound its way through the school gate and round a tree.

wind = wrap around 휘감다. 구부러지다. 에둘러 말하다.

wrap something around an object several times or twist it repeatedly around itself.

4. Chasing Butterflies

놀이터에서 Alec는 나비를 잡으려는 개를 본다. 개 앞에서 나비를 잡는 방법을 보여주기 위해 우쭐대던 Alec는 곧 자신의 치마가 거의 남지 않았음을 깨닫는다. 결국, Alec는 그리 똑똑한것 같지는 않다.

Smart Alec marched over to the dog. = walked

Round and round and round and round, she went. She didn't know that the thread from her dress was unwinding as she ran. Soon there was hardly any dress left. Not so smart, Alec.
