시간이 흘러감에 따라 ‘이혼’이라는 단어를 더 많이 접하게 되는 것 같다. 혹은 누군가는 이제는 결혼 소식보다 이혼 소식을 더 많이 듣는다고 말했다. 그러나 이혼을 했을 때 그 가족이 어떠한 과정을 거치고 어떤 감정을 가지는지는 알지 못했기에 이 책을 읽었다. 그림책이 전해주는 감정은 극히 일부일지라도 누군가를 이해하는데 도움이 많이 되었다. 작가는 아이의 말을 통해 ‘팔꿈치에 닉네임을 붙이는 일’ 혹은 ‘양말 한 쪽만 신고 잠을 자는 일’과 ‘부모님이 이혼한 일’을 비슷한 수준이라는 것을 암시한다. 누군가 보기에는 분명이 이상할 수 있지만, 그게 주인공이 이상하다는 의미는 아니라는 거다. 그리고 설령 그게 이상할 수 있지만 그 자체가 본인이고, 그 사실을 본인은 받아들이는 거다. 부모님의 이혼으로 아이가 상처받은 사실을 보여주고 그 상처를 서서히 이겨내는 모습을 담은 정말 좋은 책이었다. 더욱이 현대 사회의 모습을 반영하는 책이라서 더 좋았다.

Well, I skin my knees all the time.

 

A lot of times I miss my mom when I’m at my dad’s and a lot of time I miss my dad when I’m at my mom’s.

 

At first it made my stomach feel like I had just stepped off one of those whirly rides at the amusement park, w/o any of the fun that comes from them.

I hated it that they couldn’t hold me at the same time. I hated it. But that doesn’t mean I’m weird. That’s just the way it was.

 

The truth is, I still think about the divorce, and it still hurts every night. But everyday it feels just a little bit better.

 

… and maybe that’s weird, but to me, it feels just like me. And that feels pretty good.
